Wood SegmentsOrganic • Furniture • Furniture and furniture components • Common Lumber/Dimensional Lumber • 2x4s, 4x6s, billets, etc… • Engineered Wood Products • OSB, MDF, Partial Board, LVL, Plywood, Veneer
Wood SBAsInorganic • Gypsum and Synthetic Gypsum • Plasterboard, Drywall, Green Board • Cement Board • Plastic Wood
OSB Manufacturing • Entire tree is used • New growth instead of 60 year forests • Mostly pine, however could be “weed” specie trees • Alternative to plywood • Used in mostly housing construction • Product was invented in the late 1950’s • Just being introduced to Europe
Log Sorting • First Step • Logs are graded and sorted • Stored at the OSB facility • Northern facilities have larger storage areas • Logs are kept moist with sprinklers
Jack Ladder • Logs are heated in water • Softens the wood • Removes ice accumulation at Northern mills • Logs move up a chain driven “Jack Ladder” to debarking and Flaking/Stranding
Debarking • Bark is removed from the logs and is used for either fuel or landscaping • Log is fed to the debarker from the jack ladder with either a chain or conveyor belt
Flaking • Logs are fed into a ring knife flaker, also known as a strander • Flakes range from 10-20mm x 60-120mm • Pallmann flakers use a flat transmission belt approximately 580mm wide • Flaker OEMs:Pallmann
Drying • Flakes are then heated and tumbled in a dryer to bring the moisture content down to • Most mill fires occur when smoldering flakes are sent to the bins
Storage Bins • There are two types of Bins • Wet or Green Bins to store flakes prior to drying • Dry Bins to store flakes after drying • Most Bins have large belts inside and feed belts on top • Bin OEMs: PS&E
Blending and Scales • Blenders mix the strands with bonding agents and other chemicals • After the blenders are found the scales, which usually utilize a urethane belt • Scale OEMS: Thayer, Schenk
Forming • Flakes are oriented in Bunkers/Forming Heads and positioned according to layer on the forming belt to form a “mat” • Forming belt passes through a metal detector
Forming (continued) • The mat is then cut into billets • Material is accelerated away from the saw and loaded into a tipple conveyor. This staggering allows time to load and unload the press • Forming OEMs: Schenk Siempelkamp, Bison, Dieffenbacher, WIW
Forming (OSB Multi-Opening) Multi Opening Press Bunkers/Forming Heads Flying Cut-off Saw Metal Detector Forming Line Accelerator Tipple
Forming (OSB Continuous) RF Oven Bunkers/Forming Heads Transfer/Pre-Heater Metal Detector Forming Line Continuous Press Flying Cut-off Saw
Tray Loading and Pressing • From the tipple, billets enter a tray loader, several belts are found here. • The tray loader loads the multi-opening daylight press • The billet is pressed and heated to activate the glues and resins • Billets are ejected • OEMs: WIW, Schenk, Siempelkamp
Sawing and Sanding • Next the billets are cooled, usually in a cooling star • The billets are then ripped into sheets • Then sanded and graded • Sander OEMs: Stienemann • Finishing OEMs: Convey-Keystone, WIW/COE, Siempelkamp
