  3. The Metric System • Why do we use it? • It was created in the 1700’s to give scientists a universal system of measurement that everyone could understand. • Most other countries in the world use metric measurements in their everyday lives

  4. How does it work? Three common base units of measurement are:

  5. Length To measure length, we use a meter stick

  6. Mass To measure mass, we use a triple-beam balance or scale

  8. Liquid Volume To measure liquidvolume, we use a beakeror a graduated cylinder

  9. Solid Volume • To measure solidvolume, use one of two methods: • Displacement • Formula • Common unit: • Cubic centimeter (cm3) • 1 cm3=1mL
