The enduring theme of Judges is God’s final action—His grace—and His perpetual willingness to rescue his people
Israel’s Helpless Condition - eVILAND DISTRESS 6:1-10 • Israel’s Evil – They forsook Yahweh who had delivered them • The extent of the evil was pervasive
Israel’s Distress- destruction of land and cattle ; Israel is brought low • -Poverty of Spiritual Intimacy • - Poverty of Being • -Poverty of Community • - Poverty of Stewardship • “When Helping Hurts” – Corbett, Finkert
They Cry to Yahweh • God sends them a prophetic word • “Understanding God’s way of holiness is more important than the absence of pain” – Dr. D.R. Davis
SIN IS WHAT WE DO WHEN WE AREN’T SATISFIED WITH God’S GRACE AND PROVISION • God allows His people to sin and to suffer the consequences of their sin because He loves us and even uses our sin as a spiritual wake up call.
First Hand Faith - 6:11-24 • - The Promise of Yahweh’s Presence v.11-16 • The promise is wrapped up in one boring preposition – “WITH” • Gideon is learning to practice the “withness” of Yahweh
The Sign of Yahweh’s Presence v. 17-21 • “Gideon shows how much he values Yahweh’s promise by wanting to be sure it is Yahweh’s promise. “ Dr. Dale R.Davis
The Paradoxical Response to Yahweh’s Presence v. 22-24 • “There is nothing amazing about grace as long as there is nothing fearful about holiness.” Dr. Davis • A real awareness of God brings holy fear, but it should also bring peace.
Gideon’s First Faith Barrier 6:25-32 • God’s Demand • 1). Deal with specific sin, the source of their misery • 2). Total destruction, leave no provision for the flesh. • 3). Build a new altar for the worship of Yahweh.
Sin reflects a problem of worship – If we don’t trust and worship God we give our hearts to other things. • Gideon’s Obedience v. 27 • Fear is a signal to step out in faith.
Do you have a “call” to do something i.e. a “continual sense of oughtness” • The Assurance of Yahweh for the hesitancy of Gideon v. 28-40
MATURITY = Time + Word of God + Application of the Word • GIDEON TO JESUS • He is the full manifestation of the “withness” of God
