Accepted By God Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10:34-35). • Accepted: • To receive with a consenting mind; • To receive with favor; • To approve.
Observe: • God does not accept all. • Are conditions of acceptability with God. • Acceptance implies Rejection. • Conditions are the same for all!
Whom Does God Accept? • Negatively: No Man’s person. • For there is no partiality with God (Rom. 2:11). • And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books (Rev. 20:12). • Negatively: Not Nations. • Acceptance rests with the individual who conforms to God’s will (Acts 10:35).
Whom Does God Accept? • Positively: “Whoever fears Him…” • And: “Whoever works righteousness….” “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (Eccl. 12:13). To Fear Him and Work Righteousness is to Fear God and Keep His Commandments.
What Is It To Fear God? • Reverence - Honor - Respect • And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Mt. 10:28). • Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire (Heb. 12:28-29).
What Is It To Fear God? • Reverence - Honor - Respect Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was (Ex. 20:18-21).
What is it To Work Righteousness? • Passage teaches: Man Must Do Something! • Cornelius feared God, but was not accepted by God (Acts 10:2). • Why? Because he had not yet obeyed the commandments of God as revealed in the New Testament. • Peter preached the gospel & commanded them to be baptized (Acts 10:48).
What is it To Work Righteousness? • When penitent believers, confess their faith in Christ, and are baptized into Him--They are working God’s righteousness to be accepted by Him! • This is not righteousness established by men, but that which comes from God. • For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith” (Rom. 1:16-17).
