  2. Do juicing fruits and vegetables make you lose weight? As a weight loss nutritionist I get this question often. The answer is that it depends. Juicing and juice cleanses can help you shed a few pounds short term. However the reality is that this is mostly water weight, which comes right back. Based on scientific evidence and my expertise as a Dietitian, juicing is not an ideal way to lose weight.

  3. Although fruits and vegetables confer great health properties, they do not provide your body with the totality of nutrients that your body needs to thrive. They can actually be harmful and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Your body comes equipped with natural detox mechanisms- your liver and kidneys. Therefore, you don’t need to go on a juice cleanse to ‘detox’ or lose weight. Incorporate juices into your diet as an added bonus, and not a sole source of nutrition.

  4. I recommend cleansing your diet instead by eliminating processed foods and replacing them with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. If using juice as a supplement to your already healthy eating regimen, you will want to make sure that you include the following ingredients: Cucumbers, celery, carrots, lemon and ginger. These foods have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties – components of which are very crucial for longevity and disease prevention.

  5. Cucumbersare great for juicing because of its high water content. It contains low amounts of natural sugars and is a great source of Vitamin K –which helps with the absorption of calcium for strong healthy bones. It is a good source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure. Cucumbers also contain many antioxidants and have been shown in animal studies to reduce inflammation in the body.

  6. Celery is a low calorie food with high water content. Aside from its antioxidant properties, it can help to lower cholesterol, improve digestion and reduce bloating.

  7. Carrots are rich in the potent antioxidant Beta-Carotene. This compound has been associated with reduced cancer risk, and is also beneficial for improved vision, healthy skin and a healthy immune system.

  8. Lemon- Excellent source of Vitamin C which is a potent antioxidant. Vitamin C is important for a strong immune system, warding off colds and essential for wound healing.

  9. Ginger- Contains anti-inflammatory agent gingerols which help reduce pain associated with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Ginger can also provide relief from gastro-intestinal distress, boosts the immune system, and it also has anti-microbial properties.

  10. Most people see me for my expertise as a weight loss Dietitian. However, weight loss does not necessarily equate to good health. In order to improve your health tremendously, you will want to do the following: Eat a rainbow of colors as each hue has its own unique health boosting properties. Include plants often in your diet and aim for at least 5 cups of vegetables per day.

  11. Practice mindful eating- this means listening to your body, recognizing your body’s physical hunger cues and enjoying your food without overeating. Incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise or mindful movement daily.
