Toward a Greener World: The (Re)search for Pb-Free PiezoelectricsXiaoli Tan, Iowa State University, DMR 1037898 Outcome: Researchers at Iowa State University have discovered a new mechanism that governs the deformation of piezoelectric materials under electric field. Impact: This mechanism will help to eliminate Pb, the substance detrimental to the environment and human health, from piezoelectric materials that are widely used in speaker phones and ultrasonic medical imaging devices. 0 kV/cm Explanation: Piezoelectric materials are widely used in medical imaging instruments and underwater communication devices. Current industrial standard material for these applications is “PZT” or lead zirconatetitanate. It contains ~63 wt.% of Pb. However, Pbis one of the most common and serious threats to the environment and human health. Professor Xiaoli Tan, of Iowa State's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, led the team, which discovered a new mechanism for the electric field induced strain in a Pb-free material. The discovery can potentially lead to the development of new Pb-free materials with high performance. 12.5 kV/cm The response of a Pb-free material to electric field revealed at the nanometer scale.
