What did you say? • Paragraph 3 – how many quotations have you made? • What comments/analysis have you made. Could you say more? What? • Repeat process for paragraph 4. • Do you have topic sentences at the start of each paragraph? Could these be improved? • Have you used link words – however, moreover, furthermore on the other hand…
Paragraph 5 • This will focus on section 2 of the letter • You must mention the word ‘anecdotes’ in this section if you have not done so already. • How do these anecdotes evoke the theme of love or regret or both. • Why is the metaphor ‘your eyes had become waterfalls’ so poignant
Paragraph 6 • This will analyse the final section starting ‘I was too young to understand…’ • You could comment on the narrative voice – one of reflection. • Keane evokes the emotion of regret very powerfully in the final lines by use of hyperbole.
Topic sentences In the second section of this letter Keane goes on to give a series of anecdotes which emphasis the powerful emotions of love and regret… ‘Tell her I love her’ Father’s unrequited love reveals his lonliness ‘Christmas that year’ – sentence structure emphasises how much he can remember. This reveals this was important to him.
Section 3 Fergal Keane finishes his letter with a reflective tone which reveals the extent of his regret and loss ‘drifting closer to darkenss’ – euphemism Repetition of ‘gave up’ emphasises that Keane’s father was not the only person to ‘give up’. Fergal Keane had himself given up on his dad.
