Remember to give EVERY page a date, title, and page number. • Standard: S7CS2– Students will use standard safety practices for all classroom lab and field investigations. • Sponge: Respond to the following question in 3-4 COMPLETE sentences. • Why is lab safety important? Give examples where appropriate. • Glue the Lab Safety Notes handout to p. 10 in your INB. Complete your notes as we discuss the Lab Safety PowerPoint.

  3. Safety First! • Why Safety First? • In your notes, describe why you think lab safety is a priority in this classroom. SCIENCE LAB!

  4. General Rules Leave lunch for later… Never eat or taste anything in the lab.

  5. Always follow the teacher’s directions.(Even if he looks like this.) General Rules

  7. Horseplay and goofing off are not tolerated in the lab. General Rules

  8. Do not hold things in your hands while cutting; instead, place it on a flat surface. • Do not walk or run with sharp objects. • Cut away from yourself and others. • Be very careful! Sharp objects can cause serious injury. Sharp Object Safety

  9. Many chemicals also require you to wear gloves and a lab apron. • You must wear safety goggles while working with chemicals. Regular eyewear is not sufficient. • Some chemical containers must also be handled with tongs. Chemical Safety

  10. Before using a chemical, check the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for information on how to use and not to use the substance. Chemical Safety

  11. Your teacher should have a copy of the MSDS for every substance you use in the lab. You can also find the MSDS of substances online. Chemical Safety

  12. Pull long hair back in a ponytail. • Move hot items with tongs or heavy gloves. • Do not put face or hands over boiling liquids. • Make sure all containers are made of heat-proof glass. • Wear goggles. Fire and Heat Safety

  13. Careful with hot liquids. • Do not point containers at others while being heated. • Keep all other materials away from heat source. • Turn off heat source when finished. • Allow glassware plenty of time to cool before handling. Fire and Heat Safety

  14. Do not leave cords where people could trip over them. • Keep cords or any electronics away from water. • Do not touch electrical cords with wet hands. • Do not pull on the cord to unplug; pull on the plug itself. Electrical Safety

  15. Immediately find your teacher… IF…

  16. You need to throw away chemicals. • An injury has occurred. • Something in the lab is broken. • Someone is putting others in danger.
