Young carers – everyone’s responsibility… • As many as 700,000 children have caring roles supporting parents or siblings with disabilities, mental health issues or alcohol or substance misuse. • In the UK, 8% of the total number of children who are caring are doing so for 50+ hours, 9% for 20-49 hours, (83% care for 1-19 hours) • Without early intervention and quality support services, the negative impacts on young carers are not only wide ranging, but can be severe and enduring, including on health and wellbeing, educational and employment outcomes.   5. “She doesn’t care about me. She always shouts at me and blames me for everything. Everything’s my fault. She even said that it was my fault she went into hospital.” (Jill) School report that John is showing signs of aggression.Jill’s attendance is poor. The children no longer respond to boundaries set by Kimberly. Jill takes responsibility for much of the running of the household, managing finances, shopping, bills, monitoring her mother’s safety and caring for John. Jill age 14, John, 10, living with mother, Kimberly who has been dependent on heroin for many years. Both children have lived in around 10 different houses and attended different schools.   6. Access to young carers forums and carers breaks. 1:1’s with children focusing on emotional support with behaviour management for John. Access to 2 day family group work course, focused on care of self, raising aspirations and confidence, health & safety, and parent-child relationships and routines. Multi-agency working with Children’s Services, education, housing, and substance misuse Jill, John & Kimberly Young Carers Plan

  7. Jill is now attending school and accessing 1:1 support from The Bridge. John is now attending a PRU, and receiving intensive behavioural support The children are living with family & friends It was agreed that care proceedings should be initiated. Concerns including lack of engagement and lack of routines, inappropriate visitors to the home and harmful caring roles were shared at CP meetings and used to inform safeguarding plans. “Services do not produce outcomes, people do” Cummins & Miller, 2007
