Field of view • it is the diameter of the circle of light that you see when looking into a microscope. • As the power gets greater, the field of view gets smaller.
Micrometer • a unit of length in the metric system • one millionth of a meter • Used to be called the micron. • Symbol = mm
Under low power ~ 4x (actually 10 * 4 = 40X), the entire field of view is about 5mm or 5,000 micrometers across. • If an object takes up the entire field of view, it is • 5mm or 5,000 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/2 the field of view, it is • 2.5mm or 2,500 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/4 the field of view, it is • 1.25mm or 1,250 micrometers across
Under medium power ~ 10x (actually 10 * 10 = 100X), the entire field of view is about 2 mm or 2,000 micrometers across. • If an object takes up the entire field of view, it is • 2mm or 2,000 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/2 the field of view, it is • 1mm or 1,000 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/4 the field of view, it is • 0. 5mm or 500 micrometers across
Under high power ~ 40x (actually 10 * 40 = 400X), the entire field of view is about 0.45 mm or 450 micrometers across. • If an object takes up the entire field of view, it is • 0.45mm or 450 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/2 the field of view, it is • 0.225mm or 225 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/4 the field of view, it is • 0. 1125 mm or 112.5 micrometers across
Under highest power ~ 100x (actually 10 * 100 = 1000X), the entire field of view is about 0.180 mm or 180 micrometers across. • If an object takes up the entire field of view, it is • 0.180 mm or 180 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/2 the field of view, it is • 0.09 mm or 90 micrometers across • If an object takes up 1/4 the field of view, it is • 0. 045 mm or 45 micrometers across
