What you can expect • An overview of the LTIG programme & current call • Opportunity to ask general questions • Ability to listen again to the presentation (this is being recorded) • All slides will also be made available from the main LTIG webpage CC-BY h.price@jisc.ac.uk
Why Learning & Teaching Innovation Grants? • To help allow new and innovative ideas to filter through from the community that do not fit conveniently within a traditional JISC call for proposals • Lightweight initial application process for institutions looking to bid • Particularly suitable for smaller projects CC-BY h.price@jisc.ac.uk
A brief selection of the outputs so far 369 proposals submitted 40 interviews held Augmented Reality Project (Round 5) 19 projects funded ALLE Project (Round 5) Blind Cricket Project (Round 3) 6 calls released since May 2008 All outputs available via www.jisc.ac.uk/ltig Poetik Project (Round 4)
The current call (04/08 – Round 6) • Grants of up to £50,000 are available – smaller projects are very welcome • Up to 10 projects will be interviewed • It is expected that up to 8 projects will be funded (this could be slightly more or less depending on the quality of the proposals and the funding requested for each) CC-BY William Warby, http://flic.kr/p/8puuqx
Eligibility (i) • Institutions that can apply for LTIG funding are: • HE institutions funded via HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL Northern Ireland • FE institutions funded via SFC, DCELLS Wales and DEL Northern Ireland. • FE institutions in England that teach HE to more than 400 FTEs (proposals need to demonstrate how the work supports the HE in FE agenda) CC-BY h.price@jisc.ac.uk
Eligibility (ii) • Proposals may be from single institutions or consortia, but the lead partner must meet the criteria on the previous slide • Only one proposal per lead institution will be considered at each assessment point • Paragraph 8 in the Call document identifies a further 7 requirements that all proposals must meet – bidders are strongly recommended to read these carefully! CC-BY h.price@jisc.ac.uk
Important dates • Deadline for submission: 12 noon UK time on Monday 21 March 2011 • Projects selected for interview will be notified by 20 April 2011 • Interviews will take place (via Elluminate) early-mid May 2011 • Successful projects will be notified shortly after the final interviews • Projects will need to start from 1 June 2011 and complete by 31 May 2012 CC-BY h.price@jisc.ac.uk
Initial Bidding Process • The initial bid template document is lightweight with strict word limits to speed the writing of bids and to cut down on the time that bidders need to invest. • Keep to the word limits, otherwise your bid may not be considered • Due to the large number of bids expected there will be minimal feedback on unsuccessful bids to this first stage • Initial submissions using the template to ELEARNING-BIDS@jisc.ac.uk will get confirmation email. If you do not get this email confirmation, please get in touch with e.lathwood@jisc.ac.uk. • Make sure you submit your bid before the deadline. Late bids will not be considered. Evaluation criteria The markers will be asking these questions when they mark your proposal: • Is the project addressing a recognised need? • Is it a good, innovative idea? • Does it fit the scope of this programme? • Does it demonstrate the potential to improve or inform knowledge/practice in the wider HE/FE community? • Is this a realistic proposal given the timescale and resources available?
Some tips... When writing your proposal: • Make sure it is clear what the project is intending to do • Include any references to existing work that overlaps with your project, making clear why the project is innovative in this context • Explain why other institutions in the wider community would be interested in your outputs and how they would be able to make use of them • Ensure it is clear in your budget what is being covered by your institutional contributions And finally, make sure you submit it in plenty of time!!
Some frequently asked questions • What does JISC consider “innovative”? • something that is unique or pioneering, and has not been done previously • using innovative technologies or practice to directly benefit learning or the learning process OR using technology in an innovative way • something that could be considered to be a "high-risk" intervention. • What institutional contribution is required? • Contribution should be proportional to the value to the institution submitting the proposal • What are the most common reasons a proposal fails? • Duplication of existing work • Unclear benefit to the wider HE/FE community • Ineligible use of funds • Lack of innovation • No demonstrable need • Lack of institutional support
