  1. AACSB Sneak Peek: How the 2020 AACSB Business Standards are Shaping Up AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business July 16, 2019 (Subsequently Updated July 23, 2019) Presenter: Stephanie Bryant, EVP and Chief Accreditation Officer,

  2. Disclaimer * Disclaimer *DisclaimerDid I say Disclaimer? • This is only a draft based on member input over the past year and BATF small group sessions. The entire BATF has not yet seen the draft. Thus, any part of this is subject to change as a result of full BATF review.

  3. One More Note to SBAA Members • Please note: Some changes were made after I presented this at SBAA. Those changes have been incorporated into this slide deck, so if you see something that looks different, that is probably why. This is a work in process and I cannot emphasize that enough.

  4. How “Reimagining Accreditation” will be Realized: 3 Components Standards Volunteer Training Processes Technology Facilitated

  5. Goals of the BATF (based on listening to you – remember these are YOUR standards) Standards • Streamline • Eliminates redundancy • Moves interpretive guidance to a master white paper • Simplifies language • Additional tables for easing PRT review (more on this) • 2013 standards are 72 pages with appendices • No appendices in the new standards • Reduces standards from 15 to 9 (currently) • More principles-based and outcomes focused • More globally-oriented • Focused on competencies • More flexible on faculty qualifications

  6. Goals of the BATF (Cont’d) Volunteer Training • Get everyone on the same page • Dispel myths • Replace legacy knowledge with a new mindset • Will be mandatory for all volunteers and schools going up under 2020 standards • Will be available both f-t-f and digitally • Will be free

  7. Goals of the BATF (Cont’d) Processes • Maturity model still on the table as a discussion point for BATF • Leverages technology to automate work around tables where possible

  8. The Role of Technology • The standards, volunteer training, and processes surrounding accreditation will be supported and enabled by cutting edge technology. • This is an ongoing project that will be completed in multi-stage pieces.

  9. The Vision for a Reimagined Accreditation Technology will be used to facilitate the compliance piece of AACSB accreditation Automation of table completion where possible (over time) Exceptions flagged for PRT follow up

  10. The Vision (Cont’d) • School report is then primarily a narrative • What have your challenges been? • Show us progress on your strategic plan (mission, societal impact) • Forward-looking – what do you want to achieve going forward and how will you do that?

  11. Peer Review Visit • PRT reviews compliance piece for reasonableness and exceptions (largely auto-generated tables) • PRT reviews school report, which will primarily be a narrative describing their journey and where they want to go in the future • Consultative element will be more important

  13. Accreditation Standards

  14. Streamlining and Simplifying: Standards vs. Interpretations • Standard 1 as an example

  15. AACSB Accreditation Standard 1: Strategic Planning • Introduction of Societal Impact as a necessary component to a school’s strategic plan. Question: General reaction to societal impact being included in strategic management. (It is also interwoven through other standards)

  16. AACSB Accreditation Standard 2: Resource Management • Expansion of previous “financial resources” into 4 components: physical, virtual, financial, staff; • Faculty are a separate standard • Inclusion of 2 new tables intended to provide better guidance to PRTs on a school’s financial vitality, both from an operating standpoint and a strategic standpoint

  17. AACSB Accreditation Standard 3: Faculty Resources • Combines and streamlines faculty sufficiency, faculty qualifications, and faculty professional development into one standard. • Percentages are the same except for elimination of the 60% SP requirement, but wording included that gives flexibility for new programs or highly technical or applied fields.

  18. AACSB Accreditation Standard 3: Faculty Resources (Cont’d) • Tables 3-1 (old 15-1) is largely unchanged • Some discussion as to whether we will keep Table 3-2 (could potentially be a narrative) – this is still under discussion by the BATF

  19. AACSB Accreditation Standard 4: Curriculum • Curriculum should be forward-looking, globally-oriented and innovative • Experiential learning experiences required • Lifelong learning mindset • Agility with both current and emerging technologies • Table 4-1 added for technology – could be searchable in the future if you were thinking of adding a new program Question: • Addition of expectation that doctoral programs teach students how to be successful in the classroom • Potential addition of Table 4-1 to document use of current and emerging technologies

  20. AACSB Accreditation Standard 5: Assurance of Learning • Largely follows the 2019 AoL white paper • “Learning goals” changed to “Competencies” consistent with multiple stakeholder input • Stackable credentials must be reviewed for quality (not full AoL) • Executive education here • New Table 5-1 that would provide a standardized way for schools to report AoL and for PRTs to not have such a burden by every school doing this differently. Questions: • Reaction to stackable credentials being included? • Accepting other country assurance of learning systems? • Should executive education be eliminated? • Reaction to Table 5-1

  21. Proposed Table 5-1

  22. AACSB Accreditation Standard 6: Learner Development • Includes time to graduation • Includes job placement rate data Question: Reactions?

  23. AACSB Accreditation Standard 7: Teaching Effectiveness and Impact • Requires faculty to be current in their discipline and with technology as appropriate to their discipline • Faculty must be able to teach in various modalities • Contains metrics both related to inputs and outputs such as faculty awards and other recognition

  24. Standard 8: Impact of Scholarship • The school, units within the school and its faculty produce high quality, impactful intellectual contributions which over time develop into mission-consistent areas of thought leadership for the school.

  25. AACSB Accreditation Standard 8: Impact of Scholarship • Simplifies old table 2-1 into a big picture instead of every possible type of intellectual contribution. Elimination of table 2-2 (list of journals) still under discussion by BATF. • Eliminates the language that the majority of scholarship must be PRJs – more tied to mission of the school • Recognizes that IMPACT is the real goal • Question: Should we use an aggregated (high-level) or disaggregated (current 2-1) method for the table?

  26. AACSB Accreditation Standard 9: Engagement with Business and Society Standard 9 [ENGAGEMENT WITH BUSINESS AND SOCIETY] The school provides thought leadership that supports external communities, enhances the practice of business and addresses real issues in society. Recognizes contributions to society at both the individual faculty level AND the school level (e.g., centers, reports, activities)

  27. Next Steps • BATF meets on 8/5/19 to go over all standards • Exposure draft will be released at Global Accreditation Conference in San Antonio (9/17/19)
