Founded in 2002. • A group of about 170 individuals mostly from the UK but with several overseas. • Membership open to anyone for a small subscription. • Interests range from history of space exploration all the way back to pre history, and most things in between. • Two major conferences a year, seven publications, plus other informal events. • Next conference in Bath in cooperation with the Herschel Society and Museum on Saturday 2nd April. • £10 to non members

  3. One Major focus of the SHA is to rediscover the UK’s local and forgotten history of astronomy. • Current results of a county by county survey are available on line and free for anyone to use. • https://shasurvey.wordpress.com/ • Please take a look, you may find something of interest.

The observatory on the lawn of the vicarage in Oxford Road was described as being of Grecian design. It contained a transit room 11 ft long, 10 ft wide and 10 ft high. There was an equatorial roof almost 14 ft in diameter; the revolving roof was formerly at Vice-Admiral Smyth’s Observatory at Bedford [Beattie; Sherwood].
