Five tips to win at online poker With online pokermaking its comeback in a big way lately, we're here to give you five tips on how to win at felt online. This article is less about the size of bets and hand selection, and more about the disciplines you need to master and the habits you need to create in order to consistently make money playing online poker. Whether you prefer tournaments or cash games, these tips are for you. Let us begin!
# 1 Keep records Keeping meticulous records is key to any long-term online pokerwinner. And I'm not just talking about whether you win or lose, although that information is certainly very important. I like to know when I play, what game, and for how long I played it. I win? To lose? Cover costs? Are you winning at a much higher rate playing Omahathan Hold 'em? Do you tend to hit and run during your winning sessions and then play marathon sessions trying to get unstuck other times? Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your games is very important to winning in the long run. There is software available that can help you keep track of your game in a very detailed way, and you should research it right away. Our brains tend to exaggerate the good things too much and forget about the bad, and you want to make sure that you are completely honest about your poker skills. In poker, we can lie to our opponents at the table, but we never want to lie to ourselves about the results. Keep track of your game and review it frequently.
# 2 study frequently This second tip goes along with the first, study! A lot! Whether you are studying your own results or a specific poker strategy, you always want to make sure you are learning about poker off the table. For some people, this means engaging in personal stories, alone or with trusted partners. For others, this is reading up on the latest GTO (optimal game theory) theories or checking out the starting hand charts. There are endless resources, and to be a winner, you must take advantage of them all. Read books, watch YouTube manual reviews, or sign up for online training sites. Some people even go so far as to hire a poker coach. Personally, I love reading poker books. I have been a winning online pokerplayer since before the original online poker boom, and it has been fascinating to see how much online poker strategy has evolved. There was a time, not long ago, when Doyle Brunson's Super System was the most detailed strategy ever written in poker. To people who are winning the game today, who go back and read Super System today, it would seem like going back to elementary school. You always want to make sure you follow the new trends in poker, because your opponents are doing it. To be a winner, your game must always evolve. The best way to stay ahead is to keep up with the latest training. I promise you, the strategies that Fedor Holt uses are not the same that Stu Unger used decades ago to win. Study, study and study some more!
# 3 Play within your funds You hear poker pros talking about this all the time, but very few players follow it. You MUST play within your bankroll. Now, there are a million different definitions of when it is appropriate to jump in limits or in tournaments with higher buy-ins. And while there are many different opinions, very few of them will tell you that you should base the bets you are playing on how much money is currently in your online poker account. Personally, I think the most appropriate time to move up limits or buy levels is when you can show that you are a consistent winner at your current bets. Here we are back to that record keeping we talked about earlier... If you are a winner on one level, you should consider moving to the next highest available level. But be very careful, that a large sample size of results is provided to base that decision. That doesn't mean that if you play 1-2 no-limit games for three hours and win a hundred dollars, you're ready to jump to 2-5! The best way to track your progress is by comparing your results to a set sample size. This can be done in many ways, but I use the following formulas for tournaments and cash games.
# 4 Pay attention I know, I know, this sounds too simple to even mention, but not paying full attention is one of the biggest leaks from online pokerplayers today. Whether it's because they're distracted by whatever else is going on in their house, their phone, or they're just browsing Reddit or YouTube, poker players are notoriously an easily distracted bunch. And while that is the case for traditional poker players, it is much easier to get distracted while playing online. The fact is, playing high-level poker can get boring at times. Poker pro Phil Galfond once said that "the best way to win every hand of poker is not to try to win every hand of poker." Sometimes the play is doubled, however unsatisfactory it may seem at the time. I see situations all the time where one player will play like an absolute maniac, and other players will throw great shots against them because they were too busy playing on their phone to notice. Don't play poker because you are bored and want to do something. Play pokerbecause you want to gut your enemies on the felt. And to do that, you have to pay attention all the time.
# 5 Don't play too many tables This last tip is unique to online pokerplayers. When you play in traditional poker rooms, you can only play at one table. One hand at a time is the only thing you have to worry about. But online, you can play as many poker tables as you want simultaneously. And that can be very tempting since the desire to act is so easy to satisfy. But playing too many tables at once can seriously hurt your ROI. Don't get me wrong, if you can handle more than one table at a time, multiple tables can be a great way to smooth out your variance and maximize your winnings. But as is often the case with many things in poker, poker players don't always tell themselves the truth about how many tables they can handle at a time. If you find yourself rushing from table to table and making decisions faster than you'd like, tone it down a bit and drop a table or two. At the end of the day, we play poker to make money, and while it's okay to give up a bit of your ROI at one table to add another table to make more money overall, there is no greater tragedy in online poker. You have to play more games than you should and go from being a winning player to a loser, because of that. We are not here to impress people with how many poker tables we can play, we are here to make money, and finding the optimal number of poker tables is very important to your long-term success.
Wrap Nothing I have said in this article is difficult to do. And I assure you that if you do each of these things religiously, you will eventually find a way to beat any game of poker in the long run. Poker is a wonderful game, at that, anyone can be good at it. Poker does not discriminate. If you try hard, you can be a winner. Thanks for reading and good luck with the virtual felt!
