  2. Acts 15-16 • Paul and Barnabas spend time in the Home Church • It is likely that they were here several years. • After hearing reports from Silas and Judas, Paul and Barnabas decide they need to revisit their churches. • They have probably been contacting them through letters

  3. Acts 15-16 • Paul had written the letter to the Galatians. • This is a different letter than his others • He is very angry at the Pharisees for introducing ideas of circumcision • He takes these people to task • He states Gospel very clearly– Galatians 3:26-29 • Galatians 2:16 also states the central truth of the Gospel

Acts 15-16 • The breakup • Paul and Barnabas have been friends almost a decade • John Mark is a relative of Barnabas– his nephew • John Mark had left the first mission trip very early • Paul was deeply unforgiving of this betrayal • Barnabas was more forgiving and saw something in this young man • The two part ways– not amicably

Acts 15-16 • Paul takes Silas, the one who was a prophet and who had encouraged the Church after the James Decision • Barnabas and John Mark head out on their way, They go to Cyprus and then to Asia • Paul goes a different direction • Notice that the original plan had been to visit the churches of the first journey

Acts 15-16 • The Gospel will spread farther than it would have otherwise. • BUT • Paul lost a dear friend. • He missed a chance to see Mark grow • He later had to admit he was wrong– and • He later found Mark to be a good servant of God (Col. 4:10; II Tim 4:11) He was profitable to me says Paul

Acts 15-16 • Paul lost a friend for a time and a chance to mentor a young man. • Paul and Barnabas seem to make up later (I Corinthians 9:6; Col 4:10) although Paul lives past Barnabas’ time– we presume this based on Paul’s mention of Mark in 2 Timothy. • Paul lost his best friend and the man responsible for his role in the Church

Acts 15-16 • The Bible considers friendship to be a central component of human life– and the life of the church • The Bible speaks of friendship in many places: • Moses– the friend of God James 2:23 • II Sam 15:37 • Prov 18:24 • Acts 27:3 • Philos– friend, close associate • The Bible uses the words for friends more than 60 times overall
