Planning a presentation A good presentation considers the following: • audience awareness • clear sections of the talk - making a start, finishing off • delivery • body language • visual aids • question time
Audience awareness • Who are they? • What are their needs & interests? • What do they already know? • What do they need from you?
Sections of the talk • Clear objectives • Logical organisation of ideas • Relevant • Appropriate length • Strong introduction & conclusion • Interesting
Making a start • Give your name (& position) • Title of your presentation • Purpose of your presentation • The main points you will cover • When the audience may ask questions • A reference to the audience to establish rapport
Finishing off • A clear signal that you are to end • A brief, clear summary of what you've said • A conclusion or recommendation (if appropriate) • An invitation for questions, comment, or discussion
Delivery • Clear, simple & fluent • Natural spoken language • Clear signalling devices • Use of pauses for emphasis • Good speed • Use notes, don't read
Body Language • Use of strong clear gestures • No distracting gestures • Good eye contact • Positive, confident, relaxed manner • Move around, but no pacing!
Visual Aids • They enhance your talk • Relevant to your talk • Clear, simple messages -don't overcrowd them • Efficient, professional use of equipment (practice beforehand) • Don't over-use
Question time • Welcome the question • Listen carefully - don't interrupt • Take time to think about your answer • Check you have understood the question if necessary • Reply confidently and briefly • Check the questioner is satisfied
Prepare well • Practice beforehand …and ENJOY IT!
