  3. What is BPSD • "Symptoms of disturbed perception, thought content, mood, behaviour frequently occurring in patients with dementia".

  4. Symptoms of BPSD On Interview: • Anxiety • depression, • hallucinations • delusions Behavioural observation: • Aggression, Screaming • Restlessness, Agitation • Wandering • Culturally-inappropriate behaviours • Sexual disinhibition • Hoarding • Cursing

  5. Why Are BPSD Important? • They result in: • excess disability • increased hospitalization • premature institutionalization • suffering for patient and caregiver • substantial increase in financial costs Finkel 1996

  6. Behaviour Assessment and Intervention Service (BASIS) • A service that assesses and establishes behaviour management plans for people with severe and persistent BPSD/MI. • It is for people over the age of 65, or for those under 65 years who also have age related issues.

  7. Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS) • Australian Government initiative • aims at helping people living in the community or in aged care facilities with severe and persistent BPSD. • NSCCAHS DBMAS Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNC), utilise a person centred evidence based approach to the assessment and management of BPSD.

  8. BPSD: Nonpharmacologic Therapy • Environmental modifications such as music, white noise, plants, animals • Speak slowly, keep commands simple and positive, use gestures, gentle touch • Behavioral management techniques • Structured activities and use of schedules • Massage, exercise
