  1. Ergonomics • Ergonomics recognized as major factor in work place health • One-third of injuries/illnesses stem from over exertion and/or repetitive motion • Cost-$20 billion

  2. Ergonomics • Improving the fit between the body and an activity • Adapting the environment & using techniques to prevent injuries • ID/reduce risk of MSD’s

  3. Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) • Associated with repetitive strain or damage to muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints • Signals: • Discomfort, swelling, aching, tingling, numbness • Signals come & go, may become constant. • Most frequently affect back & wrists • Left untreated, may limit joint’s motion

  4. Personal Risk Factors • Associated with ADL • Overweight • Under fit • Previous injuries • More than one risk factor • More often exposed>risk of an MSD

  5. Work Related Risk Factors • Posture • Slouch, twist, reach too far • Repetition • Using same muscles repeatedly • Environment • Vibration, temperature, lighting • Force • Forceful exertion, grip, pull, push, lift • Duration • The longer the duration, the higher the risk • Recovery • Moving body in same way for a long time

  6. Controlling the Risk • Id & assess risk • How much contact • Reduce risk • Plan on working toward reducing risk factors • Monitor & communicate

  7. Reducing the Risk • Take responsibility for reducing risk • Apply ergonomic principles both at work and at home • Correct posture problems • Stay near neutral position • Simple adjustments to work area
