  2. Concept talk How do inventors inspire our imaginations?

  3. Partner Share • Have you ever suggested ways a product could be made better? • What are some ways to prove a theory? • Discuss a time when you tried an experiment to find out if you were right about something.

  4. Amazing Words • Device- an invention made to do a certain job • Ben Franklin invented a pole to grip books and many other devices. • Vehicle- a vehicle is a device for carrying people or things • A ship is a type of ocean vehicle. • Enterprise-an important, difficult or dangerous plan to be tried • A trip into the desert is a daring enterprise. • Teach these words to your partner.

Shades of Meaning • She was annoyed with her little brother. • She was angry with her little brother. • Even though both tell you she isn’t happy with her brother, there is a difference. • The first one suggests she is being bothered by her brother and the second one suggests she is mad at her brother.

Shades of Meaning • Ben walked quietly down the hallway. • Ben walked softly down the hallway. • Even though both sentences tell you that Ben isn’t making much noise as he walks down the hallway, there is a difference. • The first one suggests that he is walking without talking and the second suggests he is walking carefully placing each foot in front of the other not trying to make noise.

  8. Foreshadowing Foreshadowing are the hints the authors give about what will happen later in a story. Foreshadowing builds curiosity or suspense. Let’s look back at A Summer’s Trade on page 271. I read that Tony’s uncle is home early. How does that foreshadow or hint at what will happen later?

  9. Foreshadowing The fact that the uncle is home early is a clue that something is wrong which we find out later is that his uncle is injured and can’t work.

Story Structure • Rising Action : Describes how one conflict or action builds on another, increasing the stakes as a character seeks to achieve a goal or solve a problem In A Summer’s Trade, Tony is saving money to buy a saddle. Tony feels bad about his grandmother pawning her bracelet, but when he tells his mother she tells him to mind his own business, he does.

  11. Story Structure • When his grandmother is sick, though, he gets really worried. • This chain of events is an example of rising action. It forces him to make a decision.

  12. Vocabulary • Applauds- to show approval or praise by clapping • Everyone applauds when the magician finishes his amazing act. • Inspecting- to look at closely • I use my magnifying glass when I’m inspecting the new mold growth. Teach your partner these words.

Vocabulary • Fabulous- almost impossible to believe • Synonym- incredible • The red feathers on her hat looked fabulous with a dark brown background. • Browsing- to inspect something leisurely and casually • Dylan spends hours browsing in stores but rarely buys anything. • Teach your partner these words.

  14. Vocabulary • Project-plan • The town started a project to build a new bridge. • TEACH YOUR PARTNER THIS WORD

Multiple Meaning Words • We will be growing plants for a class project. • I will project these images onto that movie screen. • What word appears in both sentences? • This word means different things: undertaking or activity, and to show in a large size • I have to use context clues to help me decide which meaning belongs to each sentence.

  16. Multiple Meaning Words • In the first sentence I see growing plants and class. • In the second sentence I see images and movie screen. • I can choose a meaning based on these context clues. When I try to replace the word with the meanings I chose, I get • We will be growing plants for a class activity and I will show these images in a large size on that movie screen.

  17. The Play’s the Thing • Read: “The Play’s the Thing” and use context clues to check your understanding of the highlighted words.

  18. Past, Present and Future • The prize was good. (past tense) • She wants to win. (present tense) Incorrect: The people cheered for the king as he passes by. Correct: The people cheered for the king as he passed by. Cheered/passed both past tense

  21. Writing Short Play- Organization Our Story is about young inventors creating a special machine Think about something that could be invented. You are going to write a short play about your idea

  22. Writing • Make a list of useful inventions that could solve problems or make life easier: • A machine that saves time on homework • A machine that transports you anywhere in an instant • A machine that changes trash into energy

  23. Writing • Now that you have selected a topic, brainstorm ideas for a play. • Let me show you an example on how to organize your story. • I will use the story sequence chart to show you.

  24. Writing • In my story chart I will write the names of my characters: Dana, Roberto who are working on an invention together • The setting will be Dana’s parents’ garage • The first event I will list has to do with Dana and Roberto discussing what to do with all the garbage.

  25. Writing What can they do next? Roberto suggests it would be great if a machine could take care of it for them. Dana gets an idea. Today, during small group instruction you will work on your organization of your play.
