History • The name Arizona comes from the O'odham Indian word for “little spring”. • The first European visitor to the state was a Spanish Franciscan friar named Marcos de Niza in 1539. He was searching for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. • Arizona has a colorful history full of old West legends such as Geronimo and Cochise. The Gunfight ar the O.K. Corral took place in Tombstone. • Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912, becoming the 48th state.
Demographics • Population- The population of Arizona in 2010 was 6,392,017 • Male: 3,175,823 (49.9%); Female: 3,216,194 (50.1%). • White: 4,667,121 (57.8%); Black: 259,008 (4.1%); American Indian: 296,529 (4.6%); Asian: 176,695 (2.8%);Other race: 761,716 (11.9%); Two or more races: 218,300 (3.4%); Hispanic/Latino: 1,895,149 (29.6%). • 2010 population 18 and over: 4,763,003; • 65 and over: 881,831; • median age: 35.0.
Interesting Facts • Arizona’s state motto is Ditat Deus, which means God Enriches. • The state bird of Arizona is the cactus wren. • Part of the 4 Corners region along with Utah, Colorado and New Mexico • Phoenix is the capital. • Twelve indian tribes live in the state. In addition to the Navajo, they include Mohave, Apache, Hopi, Paiute, Tohono O'Odham, Pima, Maricopa, Yavapaí, Hualapai, and Havasupai. • The Arizona Cardinals (NFL) Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) and Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB) are the professional sports teams in the state.
Places to Visit • Grand Canyon National Park is located in the northern part of Arizona. It is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
