Water in Africa: a few facts • Africa entails 9 percent of the world’s water resources and 11 percent of the world’s population • Only 5 percent of the region’s cultivated land is irrigated, the rest is rain-fed and highly susceptible to climate variability. • Only 58 percent of people have access to safe drinking water and less than 50 percent have access to improved sanitation. • Limited water storage and management capacity, a rapidly expanding population, and increasing climate variability • Trans-boundary nature of the continent’s waters, given that 76 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa falls within 53 international river basin catchments crossed by multiple borders.

Agricultural Water Productivity • ObjectiveMainstreaming AWM practices with increased water efficiency and productivity at the African and global level • Approach- work on policy level through CAADP- develop bankable investment projects- training on FAO tools (rainfed + irrig.)- water harvesting demonstr. projects- water audits- outreach and dissemination • Selected counriesBurkina Faso, Morocco, Uganda

  7. iMoMo - Innovative Technologies for Monitoring, Modeling and Managing Water • Generate, manage and exchange key data and knowledge for sustainable and effective water outcomes

  8. iMoMo • Forecasts on water availability, including flow and reservoir levels • Advice on agricultural calendar and water demand estimates • Weather and agro-meteorological information, including early warning • Agro-economic market information • Free-of-charge peer to peer communication • timely, place-specific and quality managed
