Predicting The Future The Olympic Games for Men’s 200 Meter Freestyle Olympic Swimming all started in the 1900’s and was held again in 1904. Then this sport was laid off and brought back up again in 1968. Women’s 200 Meter Freestyle Olympic swimming started in 1968. According to data of the top records, we see that although women started this sport on the 3rd Olympic time where this sport was held, they are catching up to men’s scores at a fast rate and will soon be able to compete in this sport against men. Women’s scores are getting better at a much quicker rate than the men’s and although men’s scores seem to be better, women will quickly catch up and be competing against men.

Questions • According to my graph, when do you THINK that Women will catch up to men and compete against each other? • Use your graphing calculator to determine when the two lines will meet and in what year this will be? • Now use your calculator to get the equations for Men’s line in the graph. • Now use your calculator to get the equations for Women’s line in the graph. • Explain which technology do you think is more accurate on comparing the two lines. The Graphing calculator or the computers graph?
Answers • If you look at my graph and extend it, you can see that in the far future Women and Men will compete. I estimated they will compete against each other around 2020. • When using the graphing calculator, you will discover that the two lines are almost parallel and will never meet also because the Men’s line is actually more steeper than the Women’s line. • The Men’s line equation is: -.23970454545455x+596.14445454547 • The Women’s line equation is: -.25772727272727x=620.55454545454 • The Graphing calculator is a lot more accurate on determining when the two lines will meet because when doing a scattered plot with a computer, you must estimate where the line belong among the points. The graphing calculator will automatically put the exact place the line goes on the graph.
