  2. Christianity Romans believed success meant were favored by the gods Some Jews cooperated with Romans Others waiting for a Messiah to save them from Roman rule and set up a kingdom of God. A third group of Jews wanted to violently overthrow the Romans

  3. Christianity 2. Jesus of Nazareth, a Palestinian Jew, started preaching at this time (approx. 30 AD) 3. His message-- strictly following the laws (teaching of Judaism) not necessary; better to transform the inner person. 4. He taught the ethical concepts of humility, charity, love for others. 5. He spoke of a heavenly kingdom, not an earthly one; this disappointed many.

Why Christianity had so many followers. • Promise of salvation impacted world full of suffering and injustice. • It gave life a meaning and purpose beyond the material things of everyday life. • Jesus had been human so it was easy to relate to. • Becoming Christian was not painful or expensive.

  8. Humans could have a personal relationship with God. • The promise of eternal life was for all, even the poor.
