MagLev Trains • Every magnet has two poles, a north pole and a south pole. • Like poles push the magnets away. They are repulsive. • Opposite poles pull the magnets together. They are attractive. • What happens when you put two magnets on a pencil? How do you get the top one to float? • This is how MagLev trains work. They use magnets to make the train float so that the friction is very small.
Levitation Chamber! Force from Magnet Force from Gravity • What other cool things can we do with magnetism? • We can make a levitation chamber out of a Pringle’s can and make a paperclip float, like in the picture. • How is the paperclip floating? • The gravitational force pulls the paperclip down. • The force between the magnet and the paperclip pulls the paperclip up. • If the magnet is strong enough, the magnetic force will overpower gravity and pull the paperclip up! • The string keeps the paperclip from going all the way to the magnet.
