  1. Outline • CAFÉ Workshop Update • Dave: Interdecadal changes in cod/haddock growth • MAB CPR • Summer Plans • Whales

  2. CAFÉ Workshop Update • CAFÉ 2006, Nov. 7-8, Portland, ME • 24 participants from 3 countries

  3. CAFÉ Workshop Update • Day 1: Arctic Climate Influences on NW Atlantic • Early & late 1990s FW anomalies • Good evidence early anomaly came from Arctic, likely through Canadian Archipelago • Late anomaly is better described in GoM/MAB, but origins are less clear • Contrasted GoM plankton changes with Canadian Shelf • Similar, but more winter-spring than fall-winter • Day 2: Top-down vs. Bottom-up drivers • Some interesting top-down linkages, but trophic cascade not supported by data • Cod in Newfoundland are food limited

  4. Gulf of Maine Time Series Herring Right Whale Calves 1980 1990 2000 1980 1990 2000 Centropages typicus Calanus 1980 1990 2000 1980 1990 2000 Phytoplankton Salinity 1980 1990 2000 1980 1990 2000

  5. Mid Atlantic Bight Zooplankton Centropages typicus Calanus finmarchicus

  6. Mid Atlantic Bight Zooplankton • NMFS operates two continuous plankton recorder transects • GoM: Boston to Yarmouth, NS • MAB: New York to Bermuda • Questions: • Does MAB show same 80s-90s pattern? • Do the same species do the same thing?

  7. Mid Atlantic Bight Zooplankton Centropages typicus Paracalanus spp. Calanus finmarchicus Metridia lucens

  8. In general, strong similarities to GoM Inverse relationship between Calanus and Ctyp 80’s vs. ‘90s But Different species have strongest response (Ctyp vs. Metridia) No reversal in 2001 Some things to look at Calanus, Calanus, Calanus First Impressions

  9. Ocean Sciences session on “Arctic influences on Atlantic ecosystems” Continue CPR workup Hope to expand analysis to entire shelf 1D modeling of freshwater anomalies and phytoplankton blooms Plan for CAFÉ 2007 Summer Plans

  10. Right Whale, Wrong Time? • Only 350 N. Atlantic right whales • Recovery limited by mortality • Ship strikes • Fishing gear • All management options depend on knowing where whales are

  11. SST Chl Courtesy PCCS Courtesy PCCS Cetacean Informatics Model Data Information Where? When? Model Data Information

  12. RWPS 1.0 • Climatological circulation fields, initial conditions, boundary conditions • No interannual variability • SST and Chlorophyll from 1998-2004 • Only source of interannual variability CCB GSC

  16. GLOBEC models are useful! Calanus abundance reflects conditions over previous months Even a little data is valuable Implications for GLOBEC
