I first want to start out by saying cheapest is not always best. You have to keep in mind that when you go cheaper that means the moving company you are hire ( if you are going with a moving company) has less overhead cost, for this reason they are able to have very low moving rates.
I would verify to make sure they are a legal and authorized moving company. Now also it all depend on if you are moving from NY to CA or from 3 miles away, are you going to have the items stored or you will unpack right when you get there?
Also the big factor is how much you will be moving? 5 bedroom house or a studio apartment? Everything factors into the price or moving quote you will get.
If you are moving cross country and have very little to move, then a pod would be your best bet. Now if you have a mansion to move then hiring a moving company would be your best choice, this means you would have to call around for price quote.
Keep in mind all moving companies have to abide by the government rule so the pricing should not be too far apart from other moving companies. Also you need to think about if you want to unload the pod or truck yourself?
If you do not hire an unload crew then that will save you some change... if you hired a moving company to do the cross country move then they should be doing the unloading for you.
In the end a DIY (do it yourself) will save you the most and save your back as well. Keep in mind that you also need to set aside some cash for moving supplies (boxes, tape, blankets) people usually do not add that to the moving cost but it all factors in with your moving cost.
