  1. Planetary Science Archive PSA User Group Meeting #1 PSA Introduction/ Context PSA UG #1  July 2 - 3, 2013  ESAC

  2. ESA Science Data Archiving • Science data is the final “product” of the mission • Much longer lifetime than the mission itself • Requirements for long term preservation • Prior to 1998, ESA Science Archives “given” to the community • No insurance of long term availability • Loss of image for ESA in the scientific community • Since 1998 (ISO), ESA Science Archives kept at ESAC • Ensuring long term preservation and availability • Higher ESA image in the scientific community • ESAC Centre of Scientific Excellence • Some similar concepts across archives • On-line, search / view / select / download, curation, statistics, …

  3. PSA Definition and Purpose The Planetary Science Archive (PSA) is the initiative, the setup, the process and the implementation to preserve data from ESA’s spacecraft to planetary bodies, as well as supplementary information acquired in laboratories or ground-based observatories. • The main objectives of the PSA are: • to support the experimenter teams in the preparation for the spacecraft and ground-based long-term archives • to enable and ensure the long-term preservation of these archives • distribution of scientific useful data to the world wide scientific community • provision of supplementary data services aiming to maximize the usage of planetary mission data and ease the scientific data analysis.

  4. Planetary Science Archive Available since March 2004: http://archives.esac.esa.int/psa Active development Datasets received from PI teams Peer-reviewedby independent team Internally validated before ingestion into the PSA Around 20TBof data on hard disks Access services (details this afternoon) Advanced search interface Map based query for MEX FTP Browser (not searchable) Machine interface (PAIO)

  5. PSA Successes • Prior to 2004 : ESA missions data (Giotto) in CDROMs in a cupboard @ ESTEC • Today : PSA @ ESAC is a single entry point to all ESA planetary science data • Seen now as the “European” PDS • Datasets are peer-reviewed • Datasets are PDS compliant • ESA SREand PSA is a major partner in all European and worldwide initiatives • IPDA • EuroPlanet

  6. PSA Main releases • 2004 : Planetary Science Archive 1.0 (Giotto) • 2005 : Planetary Science Archive 2.0 (MEX) • 2005 : Planetary Science Archive 2.5 (MEX Map Browser) • 2006 : Planetary Science Archive 2.7 (Huygens) • 2008 : Planetary Science Archive 3.0 (Rosetta) • 2009 : Planetary Science Archive 3.5 (VEX) • 2010: Planetary Science Archive 4.0 (SMART-1) • 2012: Planetary Science Archive 4.1 (Additional MEX, VEX and Rosetta panels)

  7. PSA Usage Some basic PSA usage statistics follow, generated via our internal statistics tool We have also implemented statistics for access via the ftp links on the web site. This is an interim solution to an actionto provide access statistics for each instrument. >85% of data access is currently through the FTP interface

  8. PSA Retrievals by access type

  9. PSA Accesses per month

  10. PSA Queries per month

  11. PSA Retrievals per month

  12. PSA Website Statistics (Nov 2012 to May 2013) The PSA is used regularly by a broad group

  13. MEX Web FTP statistics example (Nov 2012 to May 2013)
