Data include persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection, regardless of the stage of disease at diagnosis, and have been statistically adjusted to account for reporting delays and missing risk-factor information, but not for incomplete reporting. Data Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.

THE ENVIRONMENT GENERAL STATISTICS • 45th (out of 50) for overall health outcomes • 3rd most religious state in the country • 6th highest poverty rate • 62 of 67 counties are rural • 13thhighest HIV infection rate • 8th highest AIDS-related death rate • 12,329 diagnosed cases in Alabama HIV STATISTICS INFECTION AMONG YOUTH • In 2011, youngpeople (13-24) in Alabama accounted for about 1 in 4 new infections • In 2012, thisnumberhasbecome 1 in 3. • Collectively, youthcontract 70% of the annual STI cases. MISSION • AIDS Alabama devotes its energy and resources statewide to helping people with HIV/AIDS live healthy, independent lives and works to prevent the spread of HIV. • AIDS Alabama focuses on: • Housing • Supportive Services • Policy and Advocacy • HIV Prevention Education • Free and Confidential HIV Testing

  5. ALABAMA ALLIANCE FOR HEALTHY YOUTH. YOUTH ADVOCACY YOUTH EMPOWERMENT • Our mission is to improve the state of sexual health in youth across Alabama through advocacy efforts. • Partnership between AIDS Alabama, Advocates for Youth, and the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy • Ten member Youth Leadership Council (15-24) • Trainings • Advocacy work – Awareness, Local school board work, State policy work

  8. HIV IN YOUTH - NATIONWIDE. GENERAL STATISTICS • 1 in 4 new HIV infections occurs in youth ages 13 to 24 years. • Nearly 60% of new infections in youth occur in African Americans, about 20% in Hispanics/Latinos, and about 20% in whites. • About 60% of all youthwith HIV do not know they are infected, are not getting treated, and can unknowingly pass the virus on to others.
