(Smart Loop System) Installation Guide
Shipping Box Contains Everything that is included in the box being shipped to a customer should contain the following items: • tresSLS Sensor (the number depends on kit ordered) • tresSLS Receiver • Omni-directional antenna for Receiver Board • Documentation on CD ROM • Printed Documentation (Quick Start Guide) Everything will be securely inserted inside the box so items do not shift during shipping and handling.
tresSLS Requirements tresSLSCD Contains the following: • \Documents (please review) • tresSLS Install Guide, tresSLS Quick Start Guide, etc. • \Fliers • Sales brochures for the product tresSLSInstallation Needs: • Tool to bore a 3” diameter hole • Magnet to wake up sensor • Screwdriver for terminating wires to terminal blocks • Loop sealant Do NOT allow any magnets to be in close proximity of the sensor at any time unless you are waking the sensor or putting it to sleep.
tresSLS Dimensions tresSLS Sensor comes in two versions; the SLS-7001 which contains a single battery and the SLS-7001X which contains two batteries (recommended). tresSLS Sensor comes in two versions; the SLS-7001 which contains a single battery and the SLS-7001X which contains two batteries (recommended). Sensors should be as close to installation temperature prior to installation. Recommended to store them in your vehicle overnight.
tresSLS Sensor Cautions Always keep magnets away from sensors unless you are waking the sensor or putting it to sleep. If you store sensor near a magnet the magnet will magnetize the battery. The sensors battery after time will demagnetize and be ready for use. Sensors should be as close to installation temperature prior to installation. Recommended to store them in your vehicle overnight. Do not attempt to Synchronizing & Calibrating Sensors until the sensors are securely positioned in the ground. If SYNC LED does not go solid after 60 seconds, you will need to put the sensor back to sleep, re-SYNC and re-CALIBRATE.
tresSLS Sensor Install The recommended location for the SLS sensor is the center of the lane. For bi-directional lanes over 12’ in width, consider using two SLS sensors side by side (i.e. a 25’ lane may require 2 sensors, each 6’ from the edge and 13’ apart) The receiver has a 4’ read range radius (8’ diameter). This is dependent upon the metal mass of the vehicle and may be plus/minus up to 50%.
tresSLS Sensor Install If you are installing the SLS-7001X dual battery sensor, core drill a hole 3” in diameter and 6” deep for the SLS vehicle sensor. If using the SLS-7001 single battery sensor, your hole should be 3.75” deep. Clean the hole, fill approx. halfway with sealant, then insert the sensor, top of sensor should be flush with roadway surface.
tresSLS Receiver Install Recommended to mount inside NEMA housing. Power is connected to the bottom right green two wire terminal block. The positive wire connects to the terminal labeled +POS and the negative wire to the labeled -NEG. The Board is 2.75” (H) x 2.5” (W), antenna straight is 9” (H) x 2.5” (W) and at 90˚ 4.25” (H) x 4.75” (W). Power requirements are +8 to +36 Volts DC (not AC) The receiver board is polarity sensitive!
tresSLS Receiver Install Connect your relays to your gate operator / controller Gate 1 is Channel 1 and connects to the top two wiring connections (pin 3 + 4) Gate 2 is Channel 2 and connects to the bottom two wiring connections (pin 1 + 2) These are Normally Open relays, if you require Normally Closed relay outputs, they can be easily configured (see page 13) Do not attempt to proceed to the next step (Synchronizing & Calibrating Sensors) until the sensors are securely positioned in the ground.
Synchronizing & Calibrating Sensors Sensors are marked on the top with a Channel number CH1 or CH2 It is imperative that the sensor be synchronized with the proper channel. Never allow vehicle near the sensors during this process • Wave magnetover the sensor that was previously placed in the roadway for 5 seconds. This places sensor into programming mode, you now have 30 seconds to connect the sensor to the receiver before the sensor goes back into sleep mode. Do not allow the magnet to get close to sensors after this 2. To connect to channel 1, press the CHANNEL 1 SYNC key on the receiver board. The SYNC LED will go solid. This has successfully connected the radio in the receiver to the radio in the sensor. • If the SYNC LED blinks continuously, STOP HERE. The sensor may not have been put into programming MODE or may be too far away or line of sight is comprised. Try step 1 again
Synchronizing & Calibrating Sensors 3. Hold down the SHIFT key and press the CH1 SYNC key, then release both. The SYNC LED will blink for 30 seconds while the sensor is calibrating. 4. After 30 seconds the SYNC LED will go solid. If SYNC LED does not go solid after 60 seconds, you will need to put the sensor back to sleep, re-SYNC and re-CALIBRATE. Please see the next page. 5. Please wait 5 minutes so sensor can calibrate to the environment. 6. You need a piece of metal to test the sensor. Place the metal over the sensor, the GATE LED in the CHANNEL 1 box will go solid. Repeat this step a few times, as part of the calibration procedure. 7. Repeat steps 1 thru 6 for Channel 2
Putting the Sensor to Sleep As noted on previous page, if calibration is unsuccessful, you may want to put the sensor linked to the CHANNEL to sleep. • Wave the magnet over the sensor (about 5 seconds) until the GATE LED for that CHANNEL stays solid after the magnet is removed. You have 30 seconds to program the sensor on the receiver before the sensor goes back into sleep mode. At this point the sensor is in configuring mode. 2. Now press and Hold the SHIFT key down for 10 seconds, you will see all LEDs that are illuminated, blink briefly. You now have 5 seconds to release the SHIFT key and press the SYNC key in the CHANNEL 1 box. • If the SYNC LEDand the GATE LED lights go off, the sensor is now disconnected from the receiver and is in sleep mode. • To verify, press the Channel SYNC key, the LED will blink. To Re-Synchronize and Re-Calibrate, go to page 10
Change NO Relay(s) to NC Relay(s) The tresSLS is designed to work with ALL gate systems that allow inputs on their control board, whether they are designed to be Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) The SLS sensor by default, a NO contact, meaning it creates a closed contact when a vehicle is within its sensor range. Some gate and traffic equipment look for a NC contact, meaning it creates an open contact when a vehicle is in range. For those gates/operators requiring a NC contact you can change the state of the relay by doing the following: • Press the SHIFT key 6 times within five seconds • Press the CHANNEL 1 SYNC key once to change the state of Gate 1 relay • If you desire to change the state of Gate 2 relay, press Channel 2 SYNC key instead • You can only change the state of one Gate relay at a time
tresSLS Sensor Batteries Each tresSLS sensor is powered by a long life lithium battery(ies). The life span varies due to temperature and use conditions. WARNING: Always keep magnets away from sensors unless you are waking the sensor or putting it to sleep. If you store sensor near a magnet the magnet will magnetize the battery. The sensors battery after time will demagnetize and be ready for use.
Troubleshooting Guide Q - If the yellow Channel LED does NOT appear solid after sync and/or calibration A - Check the location of the receiver antenna, possible move outside of metal housing - Check distance between sensor and controller. Recommend 100+ feet line of sight Q - If the receiver has a loss of power, the sensors will attempt to connect for 10 tries. If unable to reconnect, the sensors will go into a special sleep mode. A - Upon restoration of power, wake the sensors up by waving metal over the sensors. Once the sensor senses two vehicles, the sensor will go back into normal mode. Q - When battery life is low, the receiver will automatically activate the relay and it will remain open until the sensor is replaced. You will see the SYNC LEDwill be blinking on the receiver. A - If you do not have a replacement sensor, then try to recalibrate the sensor. There may be JUST ENOUGH power left in the battery to give you the time to acquire a new sensor. Understand that recalibration is NOT a complete fix. This sensor may last up to week but requires replacement.
