A Quick Review • Elements of literature are the parts of a story; the fundamental features of all works of narrative fiction.
Elements • Setting: Time and place • Plot: Foundation of a novel or story which the characters and setting are built around – organization of information and events in a logical manner – see handout to review structure of plot. • Mood: Evokes certain feelings in readers • Tone: Attitude of the speaker/writer toward the subject they are writing about
Elements cont. • POV: Point of view is the mode of narration that an author employs to let the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a story, poem, essay, etc. • 1st person • 2nd person • 3rd person See handout for further explanation of POV. Elements cont. • Epiphany: A sudden insight or realization, as a means of characterizing the protagonist (main character) and providing climatic moments of revelation. • Diction: The author’s word choice. The denotative (dictionary definition of a word) and connotative (emotional/suggested meaning of a word) meanings of words. • When interpreting diction, some questions your should ask yourself: • Why did the author choose that word over that word? • How does the author’s word choice impact my understanding? • What is the relationship of word choice to the author’s purpose and effectiveness of the piece?
Your Task: • Using your notes and the Literary Elements handout, you will be creating a psychological profile of Mrs. Drover. • Ultimately, you will have to decide if “The Demon Lover” is a ghost story, or, if Bowen was trying to convey the horrifying side effects of wartime on the human mind.
