Zhou Dynasty • People from west China-over threw Shang Dynasty. (became longest lasting dynasty) • They claimed to possess the Mandate of Heaven • Zhou brought order to China • Form of Feudalism • Lords over saw & protected peasants who farmed land • Eventually lords became less loyal to Zhou King: led to Warring States (time of Civil War & territorial fighting) • Zhou weakened and ended: disorder for 40 years. • Qin dynasty later took over
Confucius & Society • Due to instability during Zhou dynasty- intellectual movement swept through China • Confucius • Taught people needed a sense of duty to be good • Ideas are known as Confucianism- (way of behaving) • Analects-book of his teachings • Stressed family order, respect for parents, & ideas about government: have become central beliefs in China • Example: Do not do unto others, what you would not want others to do to you.
Daoism & Legalism • Other beliefs developed during Zhou dynasty • Daoism • Stressed harmony with the Dao • Be like water and flow • Most famous teacher Laozi taught, not to seek wealth or power. • Legalism • Stressed man is evil by nature & need to be controlled • Political philosophy without religious concerns • Society needed to be strict • Always prepare for war.
