AG-06-04Forest Mapping and Change Monitoring LoycheWilkie,Mette (FOIM) Ivan Petiteville, CEOS GEO ADC Meeting, Washington DC, Sep. 2007 Slide # 1
Task Description • Integrate international efforts on assessment and monitoring of forests and forest changes using a combination of ground and satellite information and internationally agreed standards. • POC: FAO • Lead: GTOS, USA Slide # 2
Status • much progress has been made on the preparatory phase including : • agreement of scope, • setting up of implementation task force (FAO, JRC, SDSU), • developing the methodology for extracting and pre-processing images, • evaluating different methods for automated segmentation and detection of likelyhood of change, • identifying supplementary image sources (including radar imagery) etc. • Discussions with countries, partner organizations and potential donors have also taken place and a document for distribution to the countries has been drafted. Slide # 3
Concerns/issues • Concerns/issues which will determine our ability to deliver the end product on time: • A large number of the existing Landsat Geocover images (~1975, 1990 and 2000 datasets) need to be re-rectified. As these images are from all regions, we cannot start the implementation until this re-rectification procedure has been completed (if we do, we would have to re-do much of the work later). NASA/USGS has indicated that this work will be completed by the end of 2007. It would be good to get a reconfirmation that this timeline is still valid. • We are also intending to use the mid-decadal data set, but face a time constraint if this is not ready until end of 2008 (current schedule) or later. • Task Reporting: • no regular report of activities. Not because nothing is happening, but simply because too much is happening and still short of staff. Slide # 4
