Different Names for the gods • The Roman name for Poseidon was Neptune • The Greek name for Poseidon was Ποσειδῶν (Which meant Poseidon in Greek)
Symbols and domain • Symbols associated with Poseidon: • Trident • Fish • Dolphin • Horse • Bull • The main symbol was the trident • Poseidon’s domain was the sea. He didn’t rule any specific sea. He ruled the entire ocean. Other domains included: the earth, and horses.
Any special powers or weapons? • The main weapon: -The trident! • Some of his special powers: • He was immortal • When he struck the sea, huge waves would form • When he struck the ground, the ground split open!!!!!!!!!!!
Special personality traits • Poseidon was very strong • Poseidon was often moody • When he was having a bad day, the ocean became very strong • His anger could even kill sailors!!!!! • Whenever big waves or earthquakes would occur, everybody knew that Poseidon was mad
The myth!!!!!!! • There is one famous myth about Poseidon and Athena • Athena (Zeus’ daughter) and Poseidon both wanted to be the patron god. Poseidon offered a spring filled with salt water. Athena offered an olive tree. So the people voted. Athena won because a lot of people liked the usefulness of olives. • In another story, Olympians voted. The goddesses voted for Athena, while the gods voted for Poseidon. Zeus didn’t vote because he couldn’t choose between his brother and his daughter. Poseidon ended up losing. Poseidon was very mad so he flooded a whole, entire place.
Interesting facts • Poseidon’s dad (Cronus) tried to eat Poseidon, but Zeus saved him • Poseidon is also known for creating zebras • Poseidon was very fond of his sister: Demeter • In the SpongeBob movie, King Neptune (King of the Ocean) is an example of Poseidon
