THE UNIVERSITY IN FIGURES The University collaborates with ca 1200 foreigninstitutions, including 390 partnerships within the boundaries of more than 1000Erasmus agreementsand 200 partners from 52 countries within the boundaries of university agreements on direct collaboration. In 2011 more than 7000 students, doctoral students and UW employees went abroad for short-term studies or to lecture. At that time there were ca5100 foreign visitors at the University of Warsaw. There are also ca 1000 participants(mainlyfrom Eastern Europe as well as Sweden and Germany) of long-term degree studies.

The FOUNDATION FOR POLISH SCIENCE (FNP) AWARDS The POLISH NOBEL PRIZE 2011 prof. Tomasz Giaro (Faculty of Law and Administration), for interdisciplinary analysis of the categories of truth in the doctrines of law from antiquity to the present The POLISH NOBEL PRIZE 2010 professor Tadeusz Krygowski (Faculty ofChemistry),for creating the method of quantitative determination of aromaticityof chemical compounds
DISCOVERY of 2011 A team of astronomers including researchers from the international PLANET project and the University of Warsaw Observatory based Polish OGLE survey led by prof. Andrzej Udalski has announced results of statistical studies on, how common extrasolar planets are in the Milky Way., published in Nature, 473, pp. 349-352.
UW is one of the academic centres which has made a great use of the opportunities offered to Poland by its membership in the European Union.
R&D: CePT Consortium • consortium of 10 institutions: University of Warsaw, Medical University of Warsaw, Warsaw Technical University and 7 Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences • a centre for bio-medical research: interdisciplinary basic research, development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods (civilisation diseases,aging) • modern equipment for rapid technological progress and reaching a critical mass comparable to leading European centres • combining efforts of various scientific centres • and fields of science
R&D: CENTRE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES • the campus of mathematical, natural and experimental sciences • Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Mathematics, and Informatics as well as the cyclotron in one place • in the vicinity: the PAS institutes (biochemistry, biophysics, physiology, genetics), the Warsaw Medical Universitythe project is financed mainlyfrom the EU structural funds • supra-regional importance
CENTRE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES The CeNT building will have lecture rooms and laboratories for students and Ph.D. students of biology, chemistry,biotechnology, informatics, andstudies on environmentalprotection.
R&D: CENTRE OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL SCIENCES CENT III will include: • 133 modern laboratories in which research will be carried out on, i.a., new sources of energy, radiopharmaceuticals, active techniques and substances in medicine and cosmetology and on natural environment monitoring • the Expert Analytical Centrer conducting investigations in criminology, archaeometry, environmentalprotection, functional food technology and pro-health research. • more than 500 pieces of research equipment i.a., an animaIPET scanner, high-efficiency chromatography columns, diffractometres, CD, Raman, IR, and UV spectrometers, sequenators, cyclers, etc.
