The Premise of MPEG-4 • 1. With the advent of broadband IP delivery channels to consumers, such as Cable Modems, DSL, IP-enabled set-top boxes, or 2.5G/3G wireless networks, streaming video becomes a primary delivery medium instead of an accessory one or curiosity. • Example: today web sites are a secondary promotional medium for broadcasters. With the quality and security available over broadband networks, broadcast web sites will be able to offer pay-per-view or subscription content to consumers. • 2. The standards and markets for broadband streaming media are not yet established. • 3. Content creators and aggregators will prefer an open standards streaming media format that is not under the proprietary control of a single supplier who may be a potential competitor.
Contrasting MPEG-4 to Proprietary Formats Proprietary solutions work well in isolation, but are difficult to integrate to build interactive rich multimedia applications MPEG-4 has built-in support for building rich multimedia.
Why MPEG-4? • MPEG-4 is destined to be the broadband content delivery standard: • ISO Standard allows interoperability between vendors and across platforms • Support from multiple vendors in three different markets: • PC secure content streaming/download • VOD over IP to STB/TV • Mobile devices – 3G Phones, Wireless appliances • Support from Semiconductor, Consumer Electronics, and Applications Industries

MPEG-4 Myth #2 MPEG-4 standard is “not focused on anything” ISMA to specify a subset of MPEG-4 for practical streaming delivery over IP networks. The first version of this specification will be available mid-year. ISMA is the Internet Streaming Media Alliance founded by Apple, Cisco, Kasenna, IBM, Philips, and Sun Microsystems to accelerate the market adoption of open standards for streaming rich media over Internet Protocols. ISMA’s Charter: Promote a standard for delivering streaming MPEG-4 over IP through an industry-wide, non-profit alliance. Build upon ratified MPEG-4 video & audio specifications over IETF defined unicast and multicast protocols. Accelerate demand for MPEG-4 over IP products and services through the sponsored marketing and user education programs.

MPEG-4: Pay-per-View Application Buy the Ball! In this famous Philips demo, the ball is coded as a separate object. The rest of the scene is sent as rectangular video for free. You must pay to see the ball. YOU BOUGHT THE BALL!!! Dedicated hardware has already been developed for sports broadcasting to track the position of the ball in real-time. Thus, this is a practical application of MPEG-4 arbitrary video objects today.
EPG Concepts • MPEG-4 offers the opportunity to combine multiple streams of video and graphics together in a single transport stream. • Philips Research and MP4Net have developed a hypothetical EPG application to show the power of MPEG-4. • In addition to 2-D graphics and text, program previews are sent as low-bitrate MPEG-4 video and audio streams • These previews are dynamically selected for display based on user’s selections • Demonstration is a prototype/mock-up only and is not intended as a product
