NOW WE ARE GOING TO COMPARE HOW BEAUTY HAS CHANGED FROM CATULLUS’ PERIOD TO NOWADAYS
O secolo ignorante e grossolano!
CATULLUS Catullians beauty: • snow-white skin • black little eyes • small nose • dry lips • refined girl with grace La bellezza catulliana : pelle bianca come la neve, occhi piccoli e neri, piccolo naso, labbra umide, donna raffinata con grazia John Reinhard Weguelin "Lesbia"
DANTE • woman like an angel • long blonde hair • deep blue eyes • refined face • white skin donna angelicata, lunghi capelli biondi, profondi occhi blu, pelle chiara, viso raffinato Renoir “bagnante bionda”
NOWADAYS • very skinny • so tall • want to be perfect like models • they think only to appearance molto magre, alte, vogliono essere perfette come modelle, pensano solo all’apparenza tralasciando l’interiore
What is beauty and elegance? What is beauty and elegance? • Beuty and elegance depends from the period you’re living, because now the idea of beauty is different than 1000 years ago. And the ‘ideal woman’ of Catullus is different than the ‘ideal woman’ of Dante and of the woman of our days. But they are now like they have always been something subjective that depends from the vision of every man. • So beauty and elegance isn’t always the same for every person. For instance for me beauty and elegance means something else than for you. In the end we can say that everyone is beautiful and elegant for at least a person.
Is ancient poetry still living today? • We can definitely say that ancient poetry is strictly linked with the vision of the beauty of every age because reading ancient poems we can look like in a mirror our vision of beauty. • So meaning of the poems from Dante and Catullus isn’t living anymore, therefore the vision of ‘beauty and elegance’ has changed a lot. But the poems and descriptions of ‘beauty’ are still living today.
