YOUTH EMPOWERMENT & INCLUSION “Big Picture” approach to Human Resource Development as a major contemporary issue in IT applications ‘Gbenga Sesan Nigeria’s Information Technology Youth Ambassador www.gbengasesan.com | me@gbengasesan.com 7th Nigeria Computer Society International Conference International Conference Centre, Abuja, NIGERIA. INTRODUCTION • The New Economy is driven by ICTs • Africa’s sleeping giant is awake but we need greater networking among Government, Private Sector, Academia and Civil Society to translate statements and action plans to action • Discussing Human Resource Development with a focus on the youth is an important issue within the global Information Society space – and Nigeria belongs here
Equipping the Next Generation • Young people are extending, animating and redefining the perimeters of IT applications • Empowering and involving young people in research and industry processes will complete the “big picture” of HRD in IT application • There is a present wave of “IT thirst”sweeping across Nigerian higher institutions, for example • Equipping the youth is the proof of the Nigerian IT industry’s commitment to the future
To ACT or not to ACT • Events, communiqués, action plans need to be converted to actionable steps and implemented • Most institutions presently have IT-related clubs (JETS, Computer Clubs, Electronic Clubs, Departmental Associations) BUT we need a Nigerian Information Society Youth Network • NISYN will redirect the energy of Nigerian youths for national development IF a credible platform and environment is facilitated
CONCLUSION “I see a new Nigeria emerging, one that will be built on the labours of ours heroes past, hewn out of the debris of the present waste, and engineered by the strength of tomorrow’s leaders – the youth. These young men and women will adopt IT for the purpose of personal development, nation building, regional cooperation and global participation. They may be unknown today, but in the secrecy of their abode, they master the tools that will change their lives and that of the nation. They’re building the nation’s tomorrow today.”
