  1. The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts: Murder and Memory in an American City &#8220Ahaunted, haunting examination of mental illness and murder in a more or less ordinary American city&#8230Maure and thoughtful&#8230AHelter Skelter for our time, though without a hint of sensationalism&#8212unettling in the extreme but written with confidence and deep empathy&#8221(Kirkus Reviews, starred review). On March 11, 2003, in Brownsville, Texas&#8212on of America&#8217spoorest cities&#8212Jon Allen Rubio and Angela Camacho murdered their three young children.
