  2. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among women. In 2011, there were 307,180 breast implant surgeries performed in the United States, which is 4 % increase from 2010.

  3. BREAST IMPLANTS Consist of a silicone elastomer shell filled with saline or silicone gel. Implanted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.

  4. TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS Saline-filled  Silicone gel-filled

  5. SALINE-FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS… Approved by FDA in 2000. Silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline). Either pre filled or filled during surgery. Augmentation in 18 yrs or above andreconstruction at any age.

  6. SALINE-FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS Can adjust the filler volume after surgery. When inserted implants are empty, filled after insertions. Failure rate is high in pre filled implants.

  7. SILICONE GEL-FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS… Approved in 2006. Silicone shells filled with a plastic gel (silicone). Augmentation in 22 yrs or above and reconstruction at any age.

  8. SILICONE GEL-FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS Fifth generation ‘Gummy bear’ breast implant is most successful implant. 3 companies that sell these implants are Mentor, Allergan and Sientra.

  9. USES OF BREAST IMPLANTS To increase the breast size. When breast augmentation needs to be corrected. For replacing the breast tissue with implants, when breast tissue is removed due to cancer.
