Density Column Project. Background. Density is the ratio of the mass and volume of a substance. Each substance has a specific value for density. If a substance floats in water, its density is less than that of water. If a substance sinks in water, its density is greater than that of water.

What is expected of you… • Copy the pre-lab questions, procedures, observations, post-lab questions into your lab notebook. • Obtain a container with a secure lid to use for your density column. • Research the density of some household items to find out the order of the density column. Write this hypothesis under observations in your lab notebook. Write 10 observations about your experience. • Build your density column being careful not to mix the layers too much!

Pre-Lab Questions • Define the terms: density, intensive and extensive properties. • What units are usually used to express density?
Observations • Anything of interest to you during the research, liquid selection, sources used, building of layers or any or part of this experience may be included in the 10 minimal entries. • Your hypothesis of liquids that you will use in your density column. Please include the densities of the liquids.
Procedure • You will find four liquids with different densities using the internet or textbook. • Gather those liquids that you have researched. • Slowly pour the most dense liquid into the container and continue until all five liquids have been added. The liquids should form layers. • Cap the container and write your name on it. • DO NOT use any perishable items (eggs, mayo, etc) • Use a container that is disposable (unless you are going to retain it after grading)
Post-Lab Questions • What are your four liquids? • Which of your liquids has the greatest density? What is its density? • What are the densities of the rest of your liquids? • How could density be used to identify an unknown substance?
