  1. Metamorphic Rocks Section 3 of chapter 2

  2. Table of Contents How science works pg 1-2 Scientific Method pg 3-10 Science engineering and tech. pg 9-12 Chapter 1 review pg 13 Mineral Earth’s Jewels pg 15-20 Section 1 review pg 22 Igneous and Sedimentary pg 23-28 Metamorphic Rock pg29-32 Rock Cycle pg 33-34

  3. Essential Question • Describe the conditions needed for metamorphic rocks to form. • Explain how all rocks are linked by the rock cycle.

  4. Metamorphic Rocks pg 30 • How do metamorphic rocks form? • Metamorphic rocks are formed from existing rocks. When the existing rocks are exposed to heat and pressure, but are not melted.

  5. Metamorphic rocks pg 30 • What does the word metamorphic mean? • What Earth processes could generate the pressures needed for metamorphic changes? • It means to change form. • Mountain building, movement along a fault, burial beneath other rock layers.

  6. Metamorphic Rocks pg 32 • What can metamorphic rocks change from? • What is a physical characteristic that can help classify metamorphic rocks? • Metamorphic rocks can change from igneous, sedimentary, or from metamorphic rocks. • The texture of a metamorphic rock is what helps to set them apart. Metamorphic rocks either foliated or nonfoliated.

  7. Metamorphic Rocks pg 32 • What does it mean if a rock is foliated? • If a rock is foliated the rock has visible layers or elongated grains of minerals. These minerals in the rock have been heated and squeezed into pararllel layers

  8. Metamorphic Rocks pg 32 • What does it mean if a metamorphic rock is nonfoliated? • If a metamorphic rock is nonfoliated the rock does not have distinct layers or bands.

  9. Foliated rocks

  10. Nonfoliated Rocks

  11. Rock Cycle pg 34 • What is the rock cycle? • The rock cycle is a model used to describe how different kinds of rock are related to another.

  12. Section 3 review • Identify two factors that can produce metamorphic rocks? • List examples of foliated and nonfoliated rocks. Explain the difference between the two types of metamorphic rocks. • Explain Igneous and metamorphic rocks can form at high temperatures and pressures, What is the difference between the two types of rock? • Explain how the rock cycle works? • Pretend you are a piece of granite. Describe your journey as you move through the rock cycle as you change into an Igneous rock then to a sedimentary rock, then back to a metamorphic rock.
