Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Adding Value with the Global Curriculum or… How one small school is learning to change the world!
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Attitudes and values The ethos of our school has been positively impacted by focusing on the global curriculum. Peace and justice are important to our students, and they work throughout the community to spread what they have learned.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Respecting Ourselves and Others Our students are aware of the need for universal education around the world, and are politically engaged in making sure that every child really does matter.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Openness Learning about the Millennium Development Goals means broaching topics that are sensitive and can sometimes be embarrassing. Our students approach this with sensitivity and maturity, and are proud of being trusted to give their thoughts and opinions on what can be “adult” topics.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Empathy Understanding global issues has made us more proactive in our own communities. Of all the schools in Bradford, our school gives the 2nd most per capita to charity. This is a point of great pride for our students.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Responsibility Learning about FairTrade has shown us that our choices have effects on people far away from us. Footballs in Pakistan, chocolate in Ghana…it all matters. Leeds DEC have led teacher trainings at BVB and helped us develop materials so that we can teach the GC in all our lessons.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Solidarity Teachers from different departments regularly work together to create interdisciplinary lessons on global issues. These drop down days are a favourite with students, and a good way to integrate CPD for staff.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Teaching and CPD Since beginning our international projects 4 years ago, many of our teachers have begun to organise their own projects. Nearly 20% of teachers have participated in an international visit, and more and more of our students are participating as well. Study tour with Leeds DEC in Benin
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Preparing for the Future Students are working on a Comenius project about how traditional jobs have changed, and how we need to prepare to work in a global marketplace. Here our students are in Finland learning how to do felting.
Proud to ChangeAchieveRespectEnjoy Ofsted and SMSC Ofsted have now officially recognised the importance of the global curriculum, and inspectors want to see a coherent approach throughout the whole school, including curriculum subjects, school life and other activities. We’re already there!
