The season of Pentecost • As Christmas is the birthday of Jesus, Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian Church and God has given us the wonderful opportunity of being part of it. • Pentecost is something about a power that strengthens our life’s journey and helps us make a living witness of Jesus Christ to the world.
How the plants grow • How to take care of our garden - “Once you plant your garden, all it needs is some water and God does the rest!” • I still wonder how it is possible that those tiny seeds really grow into plants, flowers, or huge trees that are heavily laden with fruit. • “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.” • All creatures have a strong will for life. • The scientists call it gene, but I would like to call it a spirit of life.
The vital force in creation • “God breathed into his/her nostrils the breath of life, and the humanity became a living being” (Gen. 2:7). • “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (2 Cor. 4:7). • “I will make breath enter the bonds, and they will come to life,” that they really came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army (Ezekiel. 37:1-10). • God puts the breath, the spirit, the vital force in all his creations. • That’s why the entire universe is throbbing with life and life continues to go on pumping as long as life lasts.
The promise of the Holy Spirit • “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.“ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. “(vv. 38- 39). • Why do we need to believe in Jesus and have the Holy Spirit that Jesus gives? And how is Christ’s Spirit different from the force of life that God already put in our bodies?
The change of life by the Spirit • What kind of change took place in their hearts when they received the Holy Spirit? • Before they received the Holy Spirit, they only cared for their own lives. They just reacted according to their own instinct for survival. • But, when they were set on fire in that day of Pentecost, they were radically changed to new people. • It is the Holy Spirit that transformed them to stand up for Jesus, speak the truth, and fight against the evil power.
By the power of the Holy Spirit • We are all God’s creations that have a vital force to survive our lives. • But we are Christians who have the Holy Spirit in us that Jesus Christ gives his disciples. • Even if we feel like our whole world crashes on us, we can love our lives and care for all things around us. • We can do it because the Holy Spirit God has poured out in us leads us to come out of our sorrow and despair, confront all the troubles, and speak the words of salvation to the world.
Stand up for life • “Fall down” may be our middle name. • “Stand up” must be our surname. • Even if we fail and fall down, we don’t stay down but bounce back up like a roly-poly. • We have a power to bounce back up because we have the Holy Spirit within us. • No matter what situations we may deal with, we are full of life because God’s Spirit is flowing like a river within our lives. • And remember, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (v. 21). This is the word of God for the people of God.
