Freire’s Life • Born September 19, 1921 in Recife, Brazil • Died of heart failure in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 2, 1997 • Grew up during the Depression • Studied Law and Philosophy at the University of Recife • Married and had 5 children
Freire’s Life Continued • Children influenced his educational theories • Stopped practicing law to help the urban poor • Received Doctorate in 1959-University of Recife • Became the first director of the University of Recife's Cultural Extension Service • Very radical and eventually exiled
Life Continued • In 1969 he was a visiting scholar at Harvard University • Moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he assumed the role of special educational adviser to the World Congress of Churches. • He returned to Brazil in 1979
Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970) • Most famous piece of work • Currently one of the most quoted educational texts, especially in Latin America, Africa and Asia • He argues for system of education that emphasizes learning as an act of culture and freedom
