The communication process consists of a series of several interrelated steps: • Finding Ideas to Speak About • Especially important for occasions such as group discussions and public speaking
Adapting to Your Audience - learning something about the people you address. • Individual Characteristics - look at such things as a person’s personality, interests, and aspirations • Cultural Characteristics - look at such things as age, religion, and national and ethnic background • Sociological Characteristics – look at elements such as their affiliations, educational backgrounds, and occupations
Encoding and Decoding Information • Encoding - the process of turning ideas and feelings into verbal and nonverbal symbols • Decoding - finding the meaning of verbal and nonverbal symbols
Interpreting Feedback • We expect people to respond to our messages. • Feedback expresses what they think, feel, and observe.
Dealing with Interference • Interference - anything that gets in the way of clear communication • Physical Noise- consists of any sounds that prevents a person from being heard • Psychological Noise - thoughts and feelings that distract people from listening to what is said • Semantic Noise - interference caused by words that trigger strong negative feelings against the speaker or the content of the speech
