This workshop explores the strengths and weaknesses of the Roman Empire through problem-based learning activities. Participants will model the empire, analyze historical figures, and understand its impact on present society.

Big Ideas Summary of Enduring Outcomes • The Roman Empire expanded and disintegrated. • Understand the empire by studying its strengths and weaknesses. • Historians study a society to understand change and better grasp the present. • Students Will… • Model the empire, understand territorial cohesion, identify the factors that affect gov’s. • Compare and contrast strengths and weaknesses, identify and study the primary historical figures. • Timeline, affects on present society, identify unique aspects of Roman culture.

  3. Problem Based Learning Model A problem situation is presented to students who then investigate and problem solve to find solutions. To use this model in the classroom, Teachers Should: • Clearly define goals and objectives • Present puzzling problems to spark interest • Logistically organize resources and tools • Facilitate, while the students investigate and problem-solve

  4. Problem Based Learning Model 5 Major Phases: • Goals, hook, and introduction • Teams and Roles • Facilitate learning, social skills, & cooperative learning • Assess throughout and/or with presentations • Recognize group and individual efforts

Map It Out • Goals: Design and create a model through sculpting, painting, or other methods, of the boundaries of the Roman Empire at its peak.Hook: Let’s make a model!Introduction: Discuss the territories of the Roman Empire using maps. • Teams and Roles: In groups of 3-4, create an accurate model of the Roman Empire at its height • Facilitate learning, social skills, & cooperative learning: Students can collaborate with peers and get help from their classmates.

  6. Map It Out Cnt’d… 4. Assess throughout and/or with presentations: Once projects are completed, groups must present the final outcome to their classmates in a short presentation. All members of the group must be involved in the oral presentation. 5. Recognize group and individual efforts: Groups collaboratively work together to brainstorm, draft, and finalize projects. Groups are creative and the products are unique.

  7. A Walk Through Time • Goals: Construct a timeline on the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Hook: Let’s make a timeline!Introduction: Discuss the major events leading to the decline of the Roman Empire. • Teams and Roles: In partners, create a timeline showing at least eight of the major events that you feel led to the decline of the Roman Empire • Facilitate learning, social skills, & cooperative learning: Visuals, color coding, and descriptions, in addition to working in partners, will help support ELL's in understanding. The teacher will make learning equitable by assigning partners and supplying most of the resources.

  8. A Walk Through Time Cnt’d… 4. Assess throughout and/or with presentations: Students are able to chronologically order the fundamental events comprising the rise and fall of the Roman empire. The timeline is accurate and displays at least 8 major events in the correct order including brief, one paragraph descriptions of each. 5. Recognize group and individual efforts: Work is shared equally between partners.
