3. Purpose • The REAL Experience … • is tailored to meet the interests, needs, and goals of each participant. This experience is comprised of various workshops within four different levels that, upon completion individually and collectively, result in a certificate. • provides all interested students with an accessible opportunity to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes an understanding of self, groups, and their community. • offers various opportunities for students to reflect upon and develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to ethical leadership development and practices.

The Basics • Drop-in opportunity sponsored by SLiCE & collaborating partners across CSU’s campus • i.e. no application process • Can choose between a one-time workshop or certificate • Can go to any workshop in any order at anytime • Approximately 40 workshops offered per semester • Workshops are at varied days and times throughout a week

Overview of the Levels Level I – Foundations • Personal Foundation of Leadership Level II – Skills • Leadership Skills and Professional Enhancement Level III – Interest Areas • Organizational Leadership • Community Engagement Leadership • Social Justice Leadership • Outdoor Adventure & Environmental Justice Leadership Level IV – Final Certification • REAL CSU Student Leader

6. Level 1 – Foundations Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate This certificate focuses on the development of basic leadership definitions, ideas, theories, and individual development. This certificate clarifies the roles of leadership and interactions that occur within the individual, the leader, followers, and situations. Requirements: • Complete (1) REAL Experience Orientation • Attend Five (5) Foundation Workshops • Three (3) Core Level I REAL Foundation Workshops • Two (2) additional REAL Foundation Workshops, which can include any workshops identified as Level I on the semester schedule • Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours • Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion form)

7. Level 2 – Skills Leadership Skills & Professional Enhancement This area will focus on building upon the basic experience learned through the foundations level. This level will allow participants to gain a stronger understanding of their current skills and how to utilize them. In addition, this level will allow participants to expand upon their current skill level as well as gain new proficiencies for effective application. Requirements: • Complete Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate requirements (Level 1 – Foundations) • Attend Five (5) Skills Workshops • Three (3) Core Level I REAL Foundation Workshops • Two (2) additional REAL Foundation Workshops, which can include any workshops identified as Level 2 on the semester schedule • Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours • Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion form)

8. Level 3 – Interest Areas This area allows for individual development that tailors to the interest areas for each participant.

Organizational Leadership This area of development will allow individuals to learn how to effectively utilize their proficiencies gained from Level I and Level II to apply towards organizational, group, and team development.

10. Level 3 – Interest Areas This area allows for individual development that tailors to the interest areas for each participant. Community Engagement Leadership This area of development will allow individuals to understand what it means to take an active role within and outside of their communities. This opportunity will allow participants to address issues that they observe are affecting our society. Through this interest level, participants will learn how to mobilize resources and influence systems.

11. Level 3 – Interest Areas This area allows for individual development that tailors to the interest areas for each participant. Social Justice Leadership This area of development is an opportunity designed to fortify participants in leadership roles here on campus and beyond, to focus on shared experiences and to critically examine various issues and isms that relate to living in a multicultural and diverse community. The ultimate goal is to give students the skills to act on the issues and causes they are most passionate about to become agents of change.

12. Level 3 – Interest Areas This area allows for individual development that tailors to the interest areas for each participant. Outdoor Adventure & Environmental Justice Leadership This area of development is an opportunity designed for participants to gain a stronger understanding in the areas of environmental education, environmental leadership, group processing, and team dynamics.

Participants can receive a certificate in any or all of the interest areas by completing the requirements listed. Requirements: • Complete Level 1 & level 2 • Attend Five (5) Workshops • Complete eight (8) hours of service or involvement hours in specific interest area • Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion form)

15. Completion Form • This form must be submitted after completion of each level • You can find this form at www.REAL.colostate.edu • We recommend filling this form out as you go. • This form can either be turned in at the SLiCE office or emailed to SLiCE_REAL@mail.colostate.edu

16. Level 4 – Final Certification A REAL CSU Student Leader A REAL CSU Student Leader Certificate completion recognizes those student leaders at CSU who have committed to excellence of learning and commitment to themselves and our community as a whole. Students who complete this certificate have a clearer understanding of who they are, how they may impact our community, and have taken an active role in engaging our community through workshops, engagement volunteer hours, leadership roles, and experience participation.

Level 4 – Final Certification Requirements: • Complete Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate requirements (Level I – Foundations) • Complete Leadership Skills and Professional Enhancement Certificate requirements (Level II – Skills) • Complete at least two (2) - Interest Area Certificate requirements (Level III – Interest Areas) • Participate in one of the following leadership experiences offered by CSU: examples include the Orientation Leader Class (Spring), Resident Assistant Class (Spring), Women’s Leadership Conference, or another approved opportunity. • Fulfill at least 50 hours of active involvement in the process of leadership. Please note that any involvements must be approved beforehand. • Meet with a career counselor after completing Level III to discuss the applications of the leadership certificates • Complete one of the following capstone options: • Create a leadership portfolio • Develop a mentor/mentee experience for a semester

18. 19. At the completion: After each Level participants will receive a certificate At the end of the year, there will be a reception recognizing those who have completed a certificate When a participant completes Level IV, they will receive Graduation Medal, which a student can choose to wear to their CSU Graduation

20. Top 9 Questions Does it cost anything to attend? No. This program is a student fee funded program, with very minimal costs due to the generosity and time of many faculty and staff across our campus.

21. Top 8 Questions What are the time requirements? The real question is how much time would you like to put into your experience. On average, workshops are 60 minutes, some are longer and service hours are required for every level. For example, at the very minimum, a level 1 certificate can take a total of 13 hours; 5 hours for the 60 minute workshop choices and 8 hours of community service.

22. Top 7 Questions I read in Level 4 that there is a leadership experience requirement. Can I count something that I went to last year? Sometimes. In most cases, if you went through a previous leadership experience that has taken place at CSU, come to the SLiCE office and ask us. There are some you can count because we have them on record already and we recognize that CSU has a lot of great opportunities. Also, there might be some that you may not be able to count.

23. Top 6 Questions Can I do more than one interest certificate? Yes. We are also looking to explore the creation of more interest certificates. If you have a new one in mind, let us know.

24. Top 5 Questions How do we know when we've completed a level? Do you keep track of our activity? We require participants to sign in at each workshop they attend so we can record attendance. We also require participants to complete the Certificate Completion Form.

25. Top 4 Questions Does the community service I perform have to be through the REAL Experience? No. Community service can be performed individually or with a group. It can also be something you are already doing on your own. When you are ready to notify of us of what your community service project (or projects) was, we will have a form in the SLiCE office for you to complete.

26. Top 3Questions I'm a senior graduating in May, can I fulfill the certificate in time? Yes. You can fulfill one certificate or all of them, it just depends on how much time you want to put in.

27. Top 2Questions What if I'm not involved on campus, can I still participate? Yes. This could be your first step in connecting with a staff member or other participants in which your interest has been peaked to get involved somewhere else in the community.

28. Top 1Questions How do I apply? There is no application process, just drop by a workshop today.
