Desktop Background • Picture or color that appears on the backdrop of the desktop where the icons and windows appear • Picture options • Sources • Provided by Windows 7 • Picture Library • Multiple backdrops • Play as slideshow and/or shuffle • Display options • Fill • Resize to fit (stretch or shrink) • Tile or center • Format: BMP or JPG
Desktop Background • Access from control panel or right click desktop
Taskbar • Used to switch from one program to another • Options • Change size and location • Customize its display • Add or remove toolbars • Use Auto-Hide, Lock, Unlock, Aero Peek • Customize notification area icons

Screen Savers Screen Saver Settings • Prevents burn-in on older monitors • Security feature • Force logon when idle for specified time 3D Text Settings dialog box
Screen Resolution • Monitor displays content by dividing the display screen into thousands or millions of dots • Each dot is a pixel • Number of pixels on the screen is the resolution • Higher the number – more content fits – clearer – smaller • Lower the number – less content fits – fuzzier – bigger • Scaling is in Dots Per Inch • Can be changed to make things appear larger or smaller
Monitors • Orientation • Rectangular – landscape – 1024x768 • Color quality • Higher the quality – more colors displayed – more memory used • 16bit color – displays 768 colors • 24/32 bit color – displays 16.7 million colors • Refresh rate • Frequency in which screen content is redrawn/redisplayed • Hertz – higher is more clear
Multiple Monitors • Increases size of workspace • One monitor is primary – displays dialog boxes • Second monitor is secondary – displays windows. Icons • Drag from one monitor to the other • Need 2 video cards

Power Options for Laptops • Reduce power consumption – maximize battery life • Power Plans • Sleep – monitor and hard disks turn off after being idle • Hibernation – Saves everything in memory and shuts down
Themes & Schemes • Themes change everything • Background ,screen saver, mouse pointer, sounds, icons and fonts to coordinating colors and designs • Styles • Predefined in Windows 7 (Aero or Basic or High contrast) • Your own • Can further customize • Schemes • Predefined combinations of settings that assure visual coordination of items • Swicth between Windows 7 Basic and Aero

Fonts • Everything appears in a typeface (particular design of letters, numbers, symbols) • Height of character measured in points 1/72 inch • Common fonts are Times Roman, Arial, • Types • True Type & Open Type • Outline – (vector or scalar) – mathematical equation forms letters • Designed for high quality display and print at any size • Look better at high resolution • Screen • bitmapped characters (raster) – small dots arranged to form a letter • Designed for high quality display and print at screen size

Date and Time • Used to establish when files were created or modified • Located in Notification area of taskbar • Automatically synchronized to Atomic clock with internet connection • Can change format of date/time • Can add/display a second clock
Internet • A global collection of millions of computers linked together to share information • The Web is millions of web sites linked together on the internet, to display web pages • Browsers are software programs used to find and display web pages • I.E. 8 is Microsoft‘s browser that comes with Window 7 • Search the web • Create Web slices • Use Accelerators • Setup RSS Feeds • Block pop-ups and thwart Phishing attempts • Browse privately • Quick tabs

Search the web • Search Engine - Available through browser • Google • Yahoo • Bing • Wiki • Search box – Keywords, phrases • Search results – List of matches
