  1. Water Vocabulary

  2. Investigation 1 Water Observations

  3. Earth Material • A substance that makes up or comes from the earth

  4. Property • a characteristic of a material or an object, something that you can observe such as color, smell, and taste.

  5. Water • a liquid earth material

  6. Absorb • When water soaks into another material

  7. Bead • when water sits on top of a material in drops

  8. Part 2 – Surface Tension

  9. Surface Tension • the ability of a liquid to pull itself together into a smallest possible area forming a sphere

  10. Dome • when water sits on top of a material in drops

  11. Content Inquiry • Water forms a dome on a flat surface. • Surface tension makes water form a sphere on a dome. • Soap added to water reduces its surface tension.

  12. Part 3 – Water on a Slope

  13. Slope • a slanted surface

  14. Flow • the movement of a liquid over a surface

  15. Content/Inquiry • Water flows down a slope. • Bigger domes of water move sown a slope faster. • Water flows faster down a steeper slope.

  16. Investigation 2 Water Observations

  17. Part One Building a Thermometer

  18. Expand • Take up more space.

  19. Contract • Take up less space

  20. Content/Inquiry • Water expands when heated. • Water contracts when cooled.

  21. Part Two Sinking and Floating

  22. Sink • Materials that go to the bottom of a liquid

  23. Denser • When a material or object is heavier

  24. Float • When a material or object goes to the top of a liquid.

  25. Less Dense • When a material or object is lighter.

  26. Content and Inquiry • Warm water is less dense than room temperature water. • Cold water is denser than hot water.

  27. Part Three Water as Ice

  28. Content and Inquiry • Water expands and turns into a solid when it freezes. • Ice floats in liquid water, cold water from melting sinks.

  29. Investigation 3 WATER VAPOR

  30. Evaporates • When water dries from an item

  31. Water vapor • When liquid water changes into a gas

  32. Content and Inquiry • Wet materials become dry when they are exposed to air. • Water changes into a gas called water vapor, and goes into the air.

  33. surface area The area of a liquid exposed to or touching the air

  34. Content and Inquiry • More water evaporates from containers with a larger surface area. • Less water evaporates from containers with smaller surface area.

  35. seriate • to put objects in order by one property, like amount of waterleft

  36. thermometer • A tool used to measure temperature

  37. Content and Inquiry • More evaporation happens where temperatures were higher. • Less evaporation happened where temperatures were cooler.

  38. Condensation • When liquid water on the outside of the cup comes from the water vapor in the air.

  39. Water Cycle Is the sequence of condensation and evaporation of water on earth, causing clouds and rain and other forms precipitation.

  40. Content and Inquiry • When water vapor in the air touches a cool surface, it CONDENSES into a liquid. • Evaporation and condensation are part of the WATER CYCLE.
