  3. Getting Knowledge Ready Do you know what the Worksafe do? Can you sacked for no reason? What does a Union do? Do you know your rights and responsibilities at work? Workplace Effectiveness What does OH&S stand for? Can you give 3 examples of OH&S? What does the Fair Work Commission do? As a teenager, do you know the minimum wage for a job?

Worksafe • Worksafe Victoria is a Government run organisation, designed to enforce laws and policies to ensure employees are not injured (physically or mentally) in the line of work. • It is both the employers and the employees responsibility to keep the workplace a safe environment. • The major law that is enforced in the workplace is the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. • Manual Handling • Noise

  6. What are the Employer’s Responsibilities? Worksafe The employers have a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all workers and contractors. This includes: • providing and maintaining safe equipment e.g machinery. • implementing arrangements for the use and storage of dangerous material e.g. chemicals. • maintaining the workplace in a safe condition e.g. such as ensuring fire exits are not blocked. • providing workers and contractors with adequate facilities e.g. such as clean toilets, cool and clean drinking water, and hygienic eating areas. • making sure workers have adequate information, instruction, training and supervision to work in a safe and healthy manner.

  7. Worksafe What are the Employee’s Responsibilities? • All workers have a duty of care to ensure that they work in a manner that is not harmful to their own health and safety and the health and safety of others.

  8. Fair Work Commission The Fair Work Commission is the national workplace relations tribunal. It is an independent body with power to carry out a range of functions relating to: - the safety net of minimum wages and employment conditions - enterprise bargaining - industrial action - dispute resolution - termination of employment - other workplace matters.

Unions • Unions are a group of professional people that represent you, in your specific workplace. • You have to pay to be a part of the Union, however, members get specialist advice and support for you and your industry. • Unions provide professional assistance with: • Your wages and entitlements • Unfair treatment and harassment at work • Work related injuries or illness • Collective bargaining for better pay and conditions • Superannuation What Union would you join in your line of work?   10. Human Rights Commission • The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission are an independent statutory body with responsibilities under three laws: • Equal Opportunity Act 2010 • Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 • Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.

Human Rights Commission • The Equal Opportunity Act 2010 makes it against the law to discriminate against people on the basis of a number of different personal characteristics. • The Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 makes it against the law to vilify people because of their race or religion. Under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 and the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001, the commission helps people resolve complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment, victimisation and racial or religious vilification through a free, fair and timely dispute resolution service with the aim of achieving a mutual agreement.
